It’s as inescapable now as it ever was: the lazy, tedious comparison of gore-metal legends Exhumed to Carcass. Stop it. All of you. Yes, there’s a new Carcass record inbound – I understand and even share your excitement, I totally do – but Exhumed in 2013 are as similar to the Liverpudlian grinders as they ever truly were, which is to say not actually very much at all. Let’s talk about this record on its own terms for a second, shall we?

Album: Devourment – Conceived In Sewage

Conceived In Sewage

by Rob McAuslan

I so badly wanted to be excited by this. Devourment are legends in the slam scene – their last record, Unleash The Carnivore, was a spine-snapping, gory delight – and this new one is produced by Erik Rutan. Surely Conceived In Sewage couldn’t be anything other than excellent? Well…it hasn’t exactly failed entirely, and there are some great bits on it, but overall it’s lacking…something.

Portal

Profound Lore
25 February 2012

by Daniel Cairns

Allow me to get personal for a minute. As well as writing about dumbbell heavy metal, I write about computer games occasionally. Naturally this means I am followed by computer game people as well as heavy metal people on twitter (as you can imagine there’s a lot of crossover between the two). Whenever I talk about Portal (the band), computer games people think I am talking about the computer game of the same name, so being the colossal prick I am, I like to write innocuous tweets saying “New song from Portal”. Games types will click on the link, expecting a load of bleepy bloopy, quirky electronic buggery bollocks, but instead get an onslaught of atonal, stupidly violent death metal, with a singer that used to wear a cuckoo clock on his head. The amount of “aaaargh what the hell is this?” replies have made this childish and incredibly pointless endeavour entirely worth it.

Top 6: Most Necro Song Titles Of 2012 So Far

June 20th, 2012

Cannibal Corpse 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

With extreme metal having a bit of a blinding year so far, we thought this would give us the perfect opportunity/excuse to celebrate/poke fun at some of the most mortally offensive, blasphemous, gory, violent, sadistic and generally nasty song titles 2012 has thrown up. It also gives us a chance to put together one of our thoroughly researched, essential Top 6s. There’s probably a load of nasty shit we’ve missed or that’s not around yet, so leave any suggestions down the bottom and we’ll do another one come the end of the year with any we overlooked. And yes, of course Cannibal Corpse made it into the list.

Torture

by Tom Dare

When people talk about Cannibal Corpse, they usually wank on about the classics: Tomb Of The Mutilated, The Bleeding or Butchered At Birth. But there’s a slowly growing set of voices claiming their recent output is in fact the best the kings of gore have done. And Torture is the final step needed to premanently raise modern ‘Corpse among the “classics”.

Future Hits 114: Wet Nuns

Wet Nuns

From: Sheffield, UK
Lazy equation: (Viking Skull – The Boring Bits) x (The Cramps + Clutch).

Thrash Hits Verdict: We admit to being shallow individuals at times. We’re far more likely to click a link to a band that someone suggests to us if said band have an awesome name. Similarly, we’re far more likely to click away from said band with an awesome name if they turn out to be rubbish. Wet Nuns are not rubbish. They describe themselves as an “undead two piece power-death-blues-punk band who makes middle-of-the-road dad rock songs about mainly women or death, or women AND death”. They are in fact, the filthy, sleazy, whiskey-soaked duo of guitarist, Rob Graham and drummer, Alexis Gotts, and they make music that makes us want to get in bar fights in the vain hope that it might impress hot girls with tattoos.

Interview: Cerebral Bore on finding inspiration from everything from funny farts to good burgers

February 24th, 2012

Cerebral Bore 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

Last week you’ll have no doubt read us urging you to go check out ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’, the brand new track from three-quarters-Scottish-one-quarter-Dutch gore-minded upstarts, Cerebral Bore. And if you read any of the words that were alongside the bowel-threateningly aggressive death metal, you’ll know that this isn’t a cut off a forthcoming album or even an EP, but as a single. A single? Yes, and a non-album single at that. People still do those, apparently.

We figured this was more than enough of an excuse to catch up with the band’s guitarist/manager, Paul Mcguire, to find out not only why they’ve done this, but to grill him on everything else that’s been going on and is about to kick off over in the world of Cerebral Bore.

Video: Finish off your Friday with the new Cerebral Bore track, ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’.

Cerebral Bore 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

Last week, Scottish-based gore-minded death metallers, Cerebral Bore, went into the studio to record a new single. Not a new album, mind you – just a new single – in order to try out a few new ideas in preparation for their next album, whichthey’re planning on recording later in 2012. What really caught our attention, however, is how Cerebral Bore have chose to premier this new track – ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’ – on their unsuspecting fanbase.
