With Fleshgod Apocalypse’s last studio album, The Agony, you had to be prepared to sit down and give it the attention and diligence it demanded; it was a punishing and mesmerising experience as waves of debilitating kick drum and disorientating orchestral barrages churned in your ear canal. In the midst of this maelstrom, bubbles of savage melody would rise to the surface, either in the form of Paulo Rossi’s clean vocals or the breakneck riffs that forced their way above the symphonic chaos below.

Greek titans Rotting Christ – who’s name still remains the envy of every blasphemous band that wishes they’d thought of it first – had something to live up to with this, their tenth album. Their previous outing, Theogonia in 2007, was one of those albums – an astonishing record that is utterly brilliant from start to finish. The expectations were extraordinarily high. Perhaps inevitably, they’ve not quite managed to match them.

2008 into 2009: Mastodon

Mastodon have already had a pretty good time of it, touring with Slayer this year but they’re touring with Metallica in 2009 and he’s going to Greece. Wish Troy Sanders, “lead bassist” for the prog metal monsters, luck in customs.

Sharing a stage with Neurosis for two shows in Brooklyn, New York.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Losing our guitarist, Bill [Kelleher], while on tour across Europe and having to continue as a three piece.
