If you’re excited by the prospect of Corrupt Moral Altar‘s first full album, chances are it’s due to the feral rage that suffused their two previous EPs. The sludge-tinged grindcore of Whiskey Sierra and Luciferian Deathcult were the aural equivalent of a rusty steel bolt through the neck.

It’s probably going to make some of people unhappy then that Mechanical Tides is a marked evolution from that sound.

A psychologist could probably draw all sorts of conclusions from the fact that when Gregor Mackintosh, one of Britain’s most prominent doom mongers, looked for a way to channel his grief at his father’s passing, he chose raw and brutal death metal. Three years on from the somewhat sad inception of Vallenfyre, Mackintosh and his group of hyper-talented friends are back once again to explore both loss and grief, via Mackintosh’s own musical heritage from the 80s.

Guest Column: Grind To Death’s Alex Layzell on Fastcore (Part 2)

July 27th, 2012

A while ago Alex Layzell, head-honcho over at the excellent Grind To Death, wrote a column for us on the subject of Fastcore. It went down so well, we asked him back to write part 2….

Grind To Death Guest Column Fastcore Part 2 Thrash Hits

Around the world in 80 days? Bah, give me some fastcore and I will power-walk that distance twice over and still make it back in time for tea, bringing with me a fresh batch of mangos for pudding and half a dozen third world kids to hand over to any post-colonial guilt suffering celebrity. If you have no clue what fastcore or the magical properties it possesses  is then I recommend checking out my first amateur mini expose on the matter here on Thrash Hits, and for those who have already read it please continue. Once again I recommended being tightly strapped/ seat belted into a bolted chair before letting any of these feast for the ears turn you into voluntary epileptic.

Guest Column: Grind To Death’s Alex Layzell on Fastcore

March 27th, 2012

A while ago we asked Alex Layzell, head-honcho over at the excellent Grind To Death, whether he’d like to do a guest column for us here at Thrash Hits. Take it away, Mr Layzell…

Grind To Death Guest Column Fastcore Thrash Hits

So the cyborg/monster mesh that is Thrash Hits’ Deputy Editor (no one can listen to that much metal, without assimilating with it) sent me a Morse code telegram a while back asking me to do a guest post on this Mecca of review sites: Thrash Hits. Now, to do a little exposé on metal will be insulting to your intelligence, on the assumption since you are reading this you therefore read Thrash Hits; and are thus well informed and to a higher standard well beyond my primitive gonzo-journalistic comfort zone. So what can I write about? My usual praises and slanders resides in the grindcore/powerviolence spectrum of crimes against music, but today I am going to treat you to something special: Fastcore.

Napalm Death
Utilitarian

27 February 2012

by Tom Dare

It may at first glance appear odd to say it, but Napalm Death have never quite got the credit they deserve. “How so?” you say. “They’re a legendary band hailed as the godfathers of their genre.” And you’re right – to the point it’s become a vacuous cliché. There are stock phrases that get spouted about Napalm (usually prefaced with some jovial reference to them being from Birmingham) that are all-too-frequently only empty reverence of Scum, FETO and at a pinch Harmony Corruption. The fact they’ve put out astonishing records for 20 years after that gets overlooked far too often. And that Utilitarian is furiously extreme in all new ways highlights why they’re as vital a band as they’ve ever been.

Future Hits 111: Selfless

Selfless

From: Birmingham, UK.
Lazy equation: (Knuckdust + Napalm Death) x one third of Fukpig.
URL: Facebook // Reverbnation

Thrash Hits Verdict: There can be little doubt that the Midlands are the crucible that created heavy metal – forget the fact that it’s the birthplace of Black Sabbath – it’s where Napalm Death and a whole host of extreme and grind bands first played louder, faster, and noisier than anyone else in the UK. To this day, the region continues to throw up nasty little nuggets of noise for us – such as the short, sharp shocks served up by the old school ethos of Selfless. We caught up with band’s guitarist, Chris Selfless, for a little history lesson.

DripBack
From: London, UK
Lazy Equation: (grind + death metal + hardcore) – deathcore
URL: Facebook.com/dripback // Reverb Nation

Thrash Hits Verdict:
We caught the London quintet supporting Soilent Green in London a couple of weeks ago and were mightily impressed by their super-heavy metal. They pummelled seven shades of shit out of the crowd after all! Once we discovered DripBack contains ex and current members of Labrat, Ted Maul, River Freshney, and Pure Negative we had to have a chat with bassist, Adam Da Rat!
