There are bands that go well with a drink, and then there are bands that turn even the lightest drinker into a nonstop, unapologetic booze machine. To have two bands of the latter kind on the same bill is kinda genius and also kinda dangerous. Our livers were quivering in fear when we set off for this one.

Six things we learned when Thin Lizzy and Clutch played in London

DVD: AC/DC – Live At River Plate (we went to the premiere at and got drunk)

It’s a busy night in London. Katatonia headlining the Koko, performing Last Fair Deal Gone Down in its entirety and filming for a new DVD. Marty Friedman is at the Camden Underworld, widdling away and giving the guitar geeks all the musical porn they need to fretwank to. New York bruisers Emmure are headlining the Relentless Garage, providing the perfect downtuned soundtrack for some brutal pit action and dance moves people choose to forget when they wake up. DETAG.

Live & Photos: Black Label Society + Godsized @ London Hammersmith Apollo – 21 February 2011

March 1st, 2011

Zakk Wylde could easily be the most metal guitarist of all time. Last time he played Wembley Arena with Ozzy he was the support and the headliner. He even had his own half hour solo in the middle of the latter set and was on stage for pretty much three hours straight. That’s pretty metal. So we thought we’d head down to Hammersmith Apollo and try counting the number of pinched harmonics the mountain man had to offer in one night. We lost count before the first song had finished…

My Chemical Romance return with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. We heard it, watched it, reviewed it

We were at London Hammersmith Apollo last weekend to watch My Chemical Romance play an intimate show to 5,000 screaming girls. The main intention was to hear MCR play some new songs, which they did. They played four of them.

In a 22-song set, four new tracks is perfectly reasonable, especially as they walked onstage in their new Varsity-inspired look (which is sure to revitalise sales at American Apparel over the coming months) to sing ‘Na Na Na’. Retro ice hockey shirts FTW, etc etc.

Live: Airbourne @ London Hammersmith Apollo, Thursday 01 April 2010

April 9th, 2010

We trust the opinion of our man, Amit Sharma. The man has some serious metal chops. So why in the name of all unholy fuckery does he like Airbourne so much? Please, Amit: explain?

It’s the eve of the Easter bank holiday weekend, and Aussie rockers Airbourne are in town to provide the perfect soundtrack to some carefree Thursday night boozing. It would be all too easy to write off a band that’s a) from Down Under, b) was formed by two brothers, and c) can’t deny the influence of their heroes AC/DC as nothing beyond a budget Akka-Dakka.

Live: Porcupine Tree @ Hammersmith Apollo – 09 October 2009

October 13th, 2009

We liked prog at Thrash Hits back when it was uncool to like prog. Is it still uncool to like prog? We don’t care – we still like prog. Which is why Amit Sharma busted down to West London last week to catch Porcupine Tree progging it up

Steven Wilson must be pretty darn chuffed with himself at the moment: Porcupine Tree have just released new album, The Incident, to rave reviews and plenty of the tour dates listed on their website proudly state the words ‘Sold Out’. Tonight’s London show is just one of them…
