Top 6: Songs by Amen (now they’re not playing any UK shows)

August 5th, 2014

The return of Amen was big news to anyone that was an oily, depressed teenager at the turn of the century. To anyone that had just started listening to Bill Hicks and was getting aimlessly angry at everything from politics to their cat, Casey Chaos was like a sweary Jesus.

However, Amen’s proposed UK comeback tour is now dead. First a whole brace of shows were postponed so the band could continue to work on their (long, long, long) delayed new album. The subsequent implosion of Alt-Fest – of which Amen’s booking for was what sparked this tour in the first place – saw the rest of the shows get pulled as well. With certain members of the Thrash Hits team sobbing angry, nostalgic tears as we email off our ticket refund requests, we got Amen superfan Daniel Cairns to run off a little list for us…

The Top 6 Amen songs we’re not going to see played live this month anymore

For those unaware The Hell first emerged at the tail end of last year. An album of snotty, down tuned, aggro punk loaded with swearing released for free. Tongues soon started wagging as to who these mystery men actually were, the addition of a few familiar faces on the album cover only bolstered interest, and they soon became the hype band of the month, with various industry folk tweeting hyperbole over them.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to your local venue without a hundred scene kids set on beating the living hell out of you, or a frontman lobbing a bin at you, Trash Talk are back. There are very few that would argue against Trash Talk being a live band first and foremost, so does this mean No Peace provides anything for us to get excited about, other than as an excuse for Trash Talk to go out on the road and play those shows?

There’s a problem slowly sweeping its way across the nation. As serious as it is, very few are taking the stand to address. Bassists up and down the country are quaking in fear. The slow but steady rise in two-blokes-making-a-racket-core in recent times is threatening their position. The likes of God Damn and Slaves have quickly become media darlings, and despite sounding very different, they’re all been forbearers for the demise of four-string slappers and poppers.

If you turn on the news, you will see an earth crisis: storms, war, remorseless lack of respect for our planet. That is nothing new of course; as a species we’ve been ripping ourselves apart from the inside and buttfucking the environment for as long as we’ve had conscious thought. Similarly, if you head down to your local record store you will see a new album by Earth Crisis.

Live: Touché Amoré @ London Underworld – 12 December 2013

It was a Deathwish, Inc double-header the other week when Touché Amoré and Self Defense Family came to town. Well, it was a triple-header if you count Touché Amoré-side project Dad Punchers, who opened the show. Luckily our man Alex Andrews is in to this stuff, so for him it was like getting an extra slice of fried bread with a fry-up.

6 things we learnt watching Touché Amoré in Camden:

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

Like any artform, music is not a competition. There is only good and bad music and that categorisation in itself is all down to subjective taste. However, in a bid for scientific rigour; some quantitative analysis to fortify the qualitative spiels, we’ve asked all the Thrash Hits contributors to list their favourite albums of 2013. Yeah, it’s here to boost our egos by claiming what we say is best and it’ll surely get some good clicks and you may (rightly) point out that it’s just another list but, at the very least, you might see an album that you’ve never heard of and think about buying it. That would be cool.

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

If you’re on this page, you really should have seen the Thrash Hits Albums of the Year 2013 list already. If you haven’t, you should click that link or this link and sort that out. This piece will attempt to delve into some vague statistical analysis of the results. This is really only interesting if you care deeply about either the Thrash Hits Top 20, any old statistical analysis or both, so the chances are you’ll have clicked through to something else by now. Anyway…
