Electric Six are that band. Like Rick Astley, 2-Unlimited, The Wombles… Whatever’s happened since, you have to have a smidgeon of respect for a band who, when it came to the song that they’re most synonymous with, cut a promo of twenty horny Abraham Lincolns in the White House gym. Ok, just a smudgeon of respect, then. But I bet I could count on one hand the number of you who haven’t, in the heat of a dank nightclub, shrieked like Jack Wh-, I mean, “John S O’Leary”, on ‘Danger! High Voltage’. Yeah. They’re THAT band. [Read more →]

We went to see Black Label Society at Hammersmith Apollo last month and Jesus H Hetfield, our ears are still ringing. While we were there we just had to ask Godsized on how an unsigned metal band from Croydon, with only two EPs to their name, gets to support Black Label Society on the entire European leg of the Berzurkus 2011 Tour.

As soon as we heard Anathema’ s last record We’re Here Because We’re Here we knew it was going to be a strong contender for Album Of The Year 2010. It’ s not often these days you discover an album that so defiantly establishes itself as an unquestionably flawless slab of musical genius. With rumours that they would be performing this album in its entirety at tonight’s sold-out show, not even a Rob Zombie-sized hangover was going to stop us from being there.

We spent a couple of days in a park in London at the inaugural High Voltage Festival and aside from getting sunstroke, we saw some awesome stuff. Bands, mainly. We picked our top moments.

Best Air Guitar
High Voltage actually has an air guitar booth. While those of us from Thrash Hits don’t indulge ourselves (we don’t want to show anyone up, obviously. Particularly ourselves) the undoubted winner of the weekend in this particular category did his work on the Metal Hammer stage. Orange Goblin are on their usual storming form, ripping through their set of balls-out heavy metal with vim and vigour. Frontman Ben Ward is the star of the show, captivating your attention. And playing air guitar better than anyone else all weekend.

Heaven and Hell @ High Voltage Festival – Victoria Park, London, 24 July 2010

July 29th, 2010

It’s the first day of High Voltage Festival 2010, and it must be said that for a first time festival, everything seems to be running rather smoothly. The punters are in – tattooed leather-lovers in front of the Hammer Stage, wizard-like hippies smoking their pipes by the Prog Stage, and the Dad Rockers at the Classic Rock Main Stage, trying to work out if the geezer in front of them once played in Quo. Victoria Park is brimming with excitement, and it only takes a quick glance at the line-up to realise why.

The reason you’re not going to High Voltage Festival is that you’re an idiot

March 31st, 2010

With all out “Download Festival this, Sonisphere Festival that, Oh look Reading & Leeds” blathering recently, we’ve really missed out on emphasising one fact about the upcoming UK festival season: that High Voltage Festival, frankly, looks like it’s going to piss all over everyone else. The fact that it was confirmed today that Opeth will be playing their only UK festival show of 2010 there merely cements that fact.
