For those not aware, Kampfar is apparently an old Norse war cry meaning “Odin”, with a probable alternate meaning of “we’re going to disembowel you”. If you already knew that, you’re probably also aware of the Norwegian black metal band bearing that name. They have just released Djevelmakt, the follow up to 2011’s Mare, which was all about witches. Djevelmakt is all about “the muck and bile of the underworlds” which is, as concepts go, a pretty damn suitable one given their music.

Album: Shining – One One One

Shining
One One One

by David Keevill

For a band with big enough brass tacks to coin their own genre, Shining’s latest release One One One sidles past your ear drums so carefully that it doesn’t even whisper the idea of perforation. Their latest record seems set to do penance for every progressive, haunting and barmy flourish on 2010’s Blackjazz by disappointingly roving a safe path that barely touches upon their vital eccentricities.

by Gavin Lloyd

Steak Number Eight have been a name slowly seeping into more and more people’s consciousness as of late. Following an impressive support slot on these shores recently to Feed The Rhino, they find themselves as quite the buzz band. While not many scenesters go-to band of choice, the (depressingly) young Belgium scamps breed of sludgey come stoner tinged metal has seen them attracting a wealth of approving head nods and beard strokes up and down the country.

It’s going to be difficult for Man The Machetes to avoid the comparisons with their Norwegian compatriots, Kvelertak. This is mainly because they make the same kind of driving, metal-inspired hardcore punk ‘n’ roll. And they’ve toured together. And they’re both Norwegian. And they’re both fucking great.

It’s been the best part of five years since Cult Of Luna last attempted to simultaneously both scare the shit out of and crush the brains out of their audience. It doesn’t take long for sixth album Vertikal to establish the same broad mission statement. Or for the massed ranks of Swedes to re-establish themselves as one of the most vital, evocative and purposefully heavy bands around. [Read more →]

If you’re going to go for something, it’s best to go at it as hard as possible. If you’re going to be half-arsed or hesitant, people will notice. If you’re self-aware and embarrassed, the audience will hear it. But if you’re fully conscious that what you’re trying to do is over-the-top, theatrical, and going to be mocked by some, but embrace it simply because you think it’s awesome, you might just pull it off. Saturnian certainly seem to think this is the best tactic.

Over the last few months, Dragon-obsessed Norwegians,Keep Of Kalessin have got a certain amount of publicity- and inevitably a heavy dose of pillorying – since they announced their attempt to become Norway’s entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. While unsuccessful (albeit by a narrow margin), a band as good and accessible as Keep Of Kalessin deseve to be much bigger than they are, and the exposure they’ve gained might help propel them to where they truly belong. Following this all up with yet another excellent album in the shape of Reptilian will certainly help secure the affections of any new fans all this extra attention has generated.

Sweet unholy Satan, where the fuck did this come from? When did 1349 get anywhere near capable of making a record like this? They’ve made some good records, yes, but nothing that grabs you by the crotch and leads you on such a vicious crusade to scourge all that is light and good from the world in the way Demonoir does.

Can we finally put the soap opera of the Gorgoroth name dispute behind us now? As interesting and legally important as the issue was, it is surely time to get back to the business at hand- making disturbing and evil black metal and generally upsetting people.
