Opening track ‘Tonitro’ lays the foundations of Brontide’s latest album nicely – a heavy, chugging guitar drops in and out over a sparse bassline and some rather disconcerting baby noises provide the album’s only vocals. It’s already apparent, less than five minutes into the album, that this isn’t going to be a bore-fest of nondescript background music – the tried-and-tested structure of verses and choruses is cast aside in favour of unexpected changes in rhythm.

Interview: Matt Stevens talks Lucid and the internet

April 2nd, 2014

Matt Stevens 2014 promo photo thrash hits

Matt Stevens is a nice guy. Over our two-and-a-half hour stint in a pub just off Denmark Street, he uses a variant of the phrase, “Good on them,” about seven times, regularly wishing well of people he might fundamentally disagree with. Even talking about Scientology – which we agree is “ridiculously bonkers” – after three pints of paint stripper-like lager, Stevens isn’t prepared to stick the boot in: “It’s obviously not real but if it makes people happy, then that’s good.”

The Thrash Hits Top 20 Albums of 2013

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

Like any artform, music is not a competition. There is only good and bad music and that categorisation in itself is all down to subjective taste. However, in a bid for scientific rigour; some quantitative analysis to fortify the qualitative spiels, we’ve asked all the Thrash Hits contributors to list their favourite albums of 2013. Yeah, it’s here to boost our egos by claiming what we say is best and it’ll surely get some good clicks and you may (rightly) point out that it’s just another list but, at the very least, you might see an album that you’ve never heard of and think about buying it. That would be cool.

In a bizarre coincidence, 65 per cent of all articles written about 65daysofstatic feature the word “unstoppable” in them. It may be a direct quote of the sample in ‘Retreat! Retreat!’ from the Sheffield post-rockers’ debut album, The Fall of Math or it may be cleverly sculpted into a different slab of hyperbole, there to indicate that 65dos can do no wrong. That’s lazy journalism, that is. And you can say that line about stats being made up in your own head.

Remember, as a kid, looking at clouds and trying to make them into things, like animals, or dinosaurs, or huge castles and cities? Red Forest, the second album from If These Trees Could Talk, is a pretty piece of post-rock daydream. If you’re prepared to invest a little of your time first.

Interview: Larry Herweg from Pelican on humankind’s parasitic relationship with planet Earth, and other great conversation starters.

March 16th, 2012

When Pelican announced they’d be doing their first UK shows in four years this April, the first thing Hugh Platt did was cry for joy. The second thing he did was call up their drummer, Larry Herweg, to chat about it.

Whatever ludicrous post-metal tag you like to slap on Pelican, the power and presence the quartet’s wield in heavy music’s instrumental sphere is undeniable. Now that the band is gearing up for their first UK shows in nearly half a decade (spearheaded by the release of their new Ataraxia/Taraxis EP, to which we awarded a praiseworthy 5.5 out of 6 when we reviewed it a couple of weeks back), we gave the band’s drummer, Larry Herweg a call. In between reminding us how much better the whether is over in Los Angeles right now, Larry was more than happy to give us an insight into just why Pelican have been shied from our shores since 2008, and what inspired the release that’s brought them back here after so long away.

I’ve got a straw man here, and my thumb’s got an itch only a zippo can scratch. It all started with the press release for this EP. It states that with the members of Pelican now spread out across the country, and resulting changes to the ways in they record and write, “the EP represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution”. While all that maybe true – sorry Trevor, but say what?
