Primordial
Where Greater Men Have Fallen
Metal Blade

by Pete Long

It is impossible to discuss Primordial without talking about the music’s emotion as much as the music itself. Pride, grief, rage; these things meld into each other and every note, giving the band a resonance and sincerity that politicians and Christmas adverts alike would kill for. Where Greater Men Have Fallen is very much in the same vein as its predecessors, and for a band of Primordial’s consistency, that can only be a good thing.

EP: Malthusian – MMXIII

A band’s name should tell you something about them. Malthusian have named themselves after the theories of the Reverend Malthus regarding the role of war, disease and famine in keeping population levels sustainable. It is a name heavy with connotations of pessimism, inhumanity and cruelty. Given that MMXIII is the first release from the Dublin based four-piece, that name is the best clue of what to expect from this three song demo.

It is a very accurate guide.

Album: Altar of Plagues – Teethed Glory And Injury

Altar Of Plagues
Teethed Glory And Injury

by Rob McAuslan

“Impact” is a pleasingly kinetic word to actually say, one of the few that truly feels like the thing it’s trying to describe. The first syllable winds up to the plosive second, giving a real sense of the build and release involved in the whole process. It’s a word that Altar Of Plagues already undersand on multiple levels, with their two previous records landing them directly in the path of huge plaudits and reducing the attendees at their live appearances to stunned, rambling husks. Teethed Glory And Injury already promised to be a significant release for the first half of this year – and then people started to hear bits of it and that first syllable stretched itself to an impossible tension.

Future Hits 134: Shattered Skies

Shattered Skies
From: Dublin, Ireland
Lazy equation: Meshuggah + Dream Theater + TesseracT + you get it
URL: Facebook // Bandcamp

Thrash Hits verdict: This Irish quartet isn’t exactly new but they’re on the verge of doing something. Progressive metal or Djent or whatever you want to call it has become exceptionally popular over the last five years and Shattered Skies have a curiously melodic take on the genre. You won’t find many other unsigned bands that sound this good. Yes, they’re unsigned. We speak to guitarist, Ian Rockett.

Album: Primordial – Redemption At The Puritan’s Hand

April 25th, 2011

Primordial
Redemption At The Puritan’s Hand
Metal Blade

by Tom Dare

Part of Primordial’s enduring appeal is their distinctiveness within a genre where sounding like everyone else is all too often worn like a badge of honour. Obviously another part is that they have released scorchingly brilliant records, both in recent times and stretching back into their long career. Four years on from the peat-encrusted diamond that was To The Nameless Dead, the long wait for a follow up is now at an end, with Redemption At The Puritan’s Hand emerging from the mists of Eire.

Album: Altar of Plagues – White Tomb

by Tom Dare

First released over a year ago, Altar of Plagues‘ White Tomb attracted sufficient attention on Profound Lore Records that Candlelight decided to re-release it. Anyone who picked up one of the original pressings knows exactly why – Altar Of Plagues released probably the best metal record you didn’t hear last year.

Wounds
Dead Dead Fucking Dead EP
29 March 2010

by Andy Parker

Dublin-based Wounds have whipped up a bit of a media storm of late. Currently being touted by some magazine fuckwits as ‘art-hardcore’ – presumably a combination of art house and hardcore punk (oh how do you do it!? I wish I could be as imaginative as you) – I prefer to think of them as exactly what they are – a bloody raging post-punk outfit reminiscent of Scratch Acid, Big Black and Drive Like Jehu, with a bit of the good bits from The Horrors chucked in for good measure.

They also DSTRY stages with their cracking live show. The Tupolev Ghost are a fascinating, honour-fuelled band that a lot of people are going to get to care about if they get the breaks they deserve.

Swedish metal gurus In Flames have been forced to cancel their upcoming April/May tourdates for the UK and Ireland with Cancer Bats.

UPDATE! Cancer Bats are still intending on coming over here and playing some shows though. We’re guessing it’s because their flights are booked and their lives have been put on hold, they may as well get over here and cause some carnage!
