It’s fair to say that, from its inception, this project has been recieved to the widespread spaffing of pants. You’ve got two major and winning components here – three former members of post-metal demi-gods Isis providing the instrumental backdrop to the unmistakable vocal of Deftones‘ Chino Moreno; a match made in heaven.

Top 6… Things Tool Have Been Up To Instead Of Working On Their New Album

July 24th, 2012

Tool promo photo Thrash Hits

On 23 May 2011, grizzled dowsers of internet gossip felt a sharp tug from the direction of the Tool Newsletter, through which the band’s official website manager, Blair McKenzie Blake, put out the following missive:

“No matter how many new TOOL tunes are currently complete, I will personally guarantee that the new CD will be released on MAY 22, 2012 (or MAY 15, 2012).”

And lo, the internets did a crazy. Even though said-same announcement also claimed that those dates came second-hand via trance-contact (which was written down on a scratch pad) from an interplanetary avatar (and sector commander) named ZEMKLA JR..“, and this confirmation this was a joke three days later on the same site, it still sent Tool fans across the globe into a bit of a state. Well, it’s been fourteen months since that sticky leaf of disinformation was flapped around, and it’s now 6 years (and counting) since 10,000 Days. Just what in the Hell have Tool been up to all this time? We charged Ruth Booth with the task of finding out.

Album: Smashing Pumpkins – Oceania

Smashing Pumpkins

When Smashing Pumpkins played London in 2011, the crowd was split. There were those who expected Smashing Pumpkins of old, playing ‘Mayonaise’ and ‘Today’ and there were the others who had resolved within themselves that Billy Corgan was the sole remaining member of the band and that Zwan wasn’t… that bad. The former left disappointed, having forgotten that the band originally left us in 2000 with a bizarre brace of albums that were disappointingly confused and a creative zenith in turn.

This is not a grunge band any more. It has not been for some time now. Get over it. Call them The Billy Corgan Band if you want. Claim the band’s legacy is disappearing up his arse if it helps. Ignore the fact Corgan appears to have been inspired by Isis in terms of naming songs and the album. Ignore it because it’s not really important. If you’re prepared to indulge the man’s psychedelic proto prog concept 100 per cent, this might all make sense to you.

I’ve got a straw man here, and my thumb’s got an itch only a zippo can scratch. It all started with the press release for this EP. It states that with the members of Pelican now spread out across the country, and resulting changes to the ways in they record and write, “the EP represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution”. While all that maybe true – sorry Trevor, but say what?

ISIS split up? More like ISN’TISN’T then…

May 19th, 2010

You probably know this already, but ISIS have split up. While some are mourning the loss of one of their favourite bands, others could suggest that splitting up is the most interesting thing that ISIS have done since helping to reform the alt.metal world at the start of the decade.

Live: Isis @ Camden Koko – 21 October 2009

October 28th, 2009

The post-metal prog of Isis is exactly the kind of music that encourages beard-stroking. Amit Sharma doesn’t have a beard, but he knows what makes a good gig. We sent him along when Isis rolled into London.

LA-via-Boston post-metallers, Isis, have returned to London to plug their latest opus,Wavering Radiant – and where better to catch them than the Camden Koko, the venue they’ve famously previously performed their seminal album, Oceanic, in its 63-minute entirety?

Aaron Turner has described Wavering Radiant as “the closest [Isis] will get to pop,” and said that it’s less rhythmically weird than previous albums. They’ve been working with Joe Barresi, rather than band staple Matt Bayles, as producer and apparently made the effort to all be living in the same place during the writing and recording. It’s not difficult to see how a change would occur, but at the same time, everything that was said about this album before I heard it made me feel as hellishly excited that Isis were back as it made me feel slightly ill at the thought of Isis going a bit rubbish by accident.
