Interview: Jamie Lenman on Reuben’s split and his return to music

October 25th, 2013

We have a healthy cluster of Reuben super-fans in our ranks at Thrash Hits so when the opportunity arose to interview Jamie Lenman on the advent of his solo return to performing live there was an almighty clamour. Gavin Lloyd grabbed the chance, however, and had a frank and lengthy discussion with one of the finest British songwriters of this generation.

Let me start off by saying Reuben are my favourite band of all time. I love everything they’ve ever done, including all the songs on their b-sides and rarities compilation We Should Have Gone To University.

A few weeks back I was having a crappy Monday morning when out of nowhere I received an email saying front man, Jamie Lenman was set to release his debut solo album. My mood completely flipped and I struggled to contain my excitement as the man who played a big part in shaping my musical taste was releasing new material.

There might not have been many people there (Sunday night gigs can GTFO) but Gavin Lloyd was at Palm Reader’s Islington show to catch all the carnage. Even if, err, the more unfortunate part of that carnage was caused by a support band playing their last ever show….

Six things we learnt watching Palm Reader play in London:

Live: KISS @ Islington Academy, London – Tuesday, 02 March 2010

March 4th, 2010

What’s that you say? KISS? Playing to less than 800 people in London? Yep, and there was absolutely no way local longhair, Amit Sharma was going to miss the even that will one day be known as… KISSLINGTON.

When you think of seeing Kiss live, you probably envision four hairy men coated in make-up, singing songs about love and rock ‘n’ roll on a large arena stage. What you don’t expect is an ultra-intimate show at a venue you would normally go to see your mate’s band support some obscure European metallers with an indecipherable logo.

It’s hardly surprising that the 500 tickets available were snapped up within 60 seconds of being on sale and some ended up on eBay for stupid money. Im sure some die-hards out there wouldn’t have thought twice about splashing up to half a grand on seeing such a cult band in this surreal setting. You wouldn’t get this with Feeder now, would you?
