Eclecticism – it’s great, isn’t it? Well in theory it is, however more often than not those whacky boundary pushing buggers are not very good. The kind of people who claim to like iwrestledabearonce are often just try hard musos out to impress each other. If you really want to get people’s attention, why not just make outlandish claims about the size of your genitals? It’ll get you plenty of attention and also free up your time to listen to music that doesn’t suck.

There was once a time in my life where I thought power metal was absolutely worthless as a genre. I attended Bloodstock Open Air 2009 which was pretty power metal heavy, and the only fond memory I have of it is hearing some guy on speed in a stall selling shutter shades playing Stagger Lee by Nick Cave. It was the musical highlight of a festival largely full of fucking guff like Blind Guardian and Battlelore. I had a falafel wrap too, that was pretty nice.

Occasionally a band pops out and they have zero profile but has something about them – something that’s going to make a few people take note, at least. Nero Di Marte are one of them. They also changed their style slightly, rounding off the techy edges found on their old material in favour of a slightly more palatable sound.

Future Hits 109: HOLY

HOLY
From: Milan, Italy
Lazy equation: (xHCx x Italy x very short songs) + veganism
URL: Facebook // Twitter

Thrash Hits Verdict: 8 songs. 11 minutes. They’re the basic facts about HOLY’s debut, self-titled EP – out today. If that doesn’t tell you exactly why they piqued our interest then all might be lost. There’s rawness about their music that really hits home. The anger in their songs is so bloody furious that you can’t help but take notice. And they’re Italian. We love pizza. Brutal pizza.

2008 into 2009: Malefice

December 8th, 2008

Malefice are one of British heavy metal’s great hopes for the next few years. Basically, they’re dead good, bloody love their metal (especially the Download Festival part of it) and vocalist Dale Butler, does not like Kid Rock.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Playing Download 2008, dude. Literally lived a dream that day. Thank you to all the people that came out early and bled for us! It was insane!

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Probably crashing our van on tour in September. It wasn’t that bad – nobody was hurt – but it kept us off the road for four days. Bear in mind we had been in the studio recording the new album for about three to four months, so we were eager to be out playing. It sucked.
