PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #11 – A new year comes after… last year

March 19th, 2014

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

It’s been nine months since the last installment of ProgTology. That’s partly due to James “Metal” Monteith touring the world with his excellent band, TesseracT, but also because we’re lazy. Either way, let’s talk about the significant goings on…

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #10 – Getting to Download Festival? As easy as riding a bike…

June 11th, 2013

It’s fair to say James Monteith has been a bit busy releasing TesseracT‘s excellent second album, Altered State. That’s why this is his first post in eight months, but he’s already taken up a new challenge – cycling to Donington. From London. Hopefully without vomiting. Yeah, right…

Just over two months ago I was minding my own business, scratching my balls, watching the clock count down to 27 May (Altered State release date), when Prog editor, Jerry Ewing emailed me about The Heavy Metal Truants bike ride. At first I thought it was a joke – especially coming from Jerry, who doesn’t look like he’s ever sat on a bike, let alone up for a 161-mile bike ride – but after a few days of harassment I realized it was for real, and after reading about the event and the charities it supports, I was very intrigued and decided I had to get involved.

Album: TesseracT – Altered State

When doom-mongers spoke of the world’s end in 2012, TesseracT may have felt a tiny bit paranoid. Their lauded debut One had seen them branded standard-bearers of UK Djent, but a cancelled major tour, and the departure of their second vocalist in 12 months left TesseracT struggling to tread water. That they reached the end of the year with both new album Altered State in the can and the New Blood Prog Award must have left them wondering if they were victims of some great cosmic joke.

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #9 – On losing vocalists, winning awards, and bringing it back from the brink

October 17th, 2012

It’s been a bit of a rough year for the guys from TesseracT. We browbeat their guitarist, James Monteith, into telling us the inside story of just what’s been going on with them these last few months.

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

Let’s be straight up; the last year has pretty much sucked for TesseracT. We lost our singer from our debut album, much to the disappointment of fans, we parted ways with our US management, lost our US booking agent and stopped getting any gig offers in the UK / Europe.

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #8 – Madball @ Hevy Fest 2012

August 1st, 2012

In the latest installment of djent’s chuckled answer to sobriety and common sense, James Monteith of the mighty TesseracT tells you why you should go and see Madball this weekend. It makes sense.

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

Madball are better than your favourite hardcore band.

I’m super excited about going to Hevy festival this week as it’s possibly my favourite festival line up all year: Meshuggah, Converge, Glassjaw, Will Haven, The Safety Fire, Hundred Reasons, Campus… and the kings of metallic hardcore, MADBALL. Oh yes.

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #7 – Download Festival 2012

July 12th, 2012

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

Okay, so this isn’t strictly a new column from James, but we did catch up with Mr Monteith backstage at this year’s Download Festival, where we cajoled him in front of our camera to talk about what really happened with regards to Elliot Coleman, to reminisce about that time he was sick all over Raz’s shoes, and to speculate on how much we’d have to pay him to get him to repeat his journo-vomiting technique over our contributor Tom Dare’s hair.

Heavy Metal Sandwich 003: James Monteith of TesseracT

July 3rd, 2012

The sandwich is possibly the greatest food-based invention. We need to be able to eat and post on Facebook at the same time. Sandwiches allow us to do this. The best thing about sandwiches, however, is that anybody can eat them. Vegetarian? Put some more salad in. Belly doesn’t like wheat? Use some gluten-free bread then! And everybody has a favourite sandwich. Even bands…

TesseracT have just parted ways with their third vocalist, Eliot Coleman and this account of sandwich anarchy from guitarist James “Metal / Ten Teeth” Monteith may go some way to explaining why the Djent masters go through vocalists like we go through underpants. (One a year.)

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #6 – Record Store Day

April 20th, 2012

Here’s a great account from TesseracT guitarist, James Monteith about why he feels strongly about Record Store Day. He’s in a band so is actually naturally part of RSD every single day. It’s also a great way for us to brag about what we got from Record Store Day last year.

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

Another blog within a month? No way. Well I pulled my finger out for this one as it’s Record Store Day this weekend, and it was something I felt I should comment on. Independently-owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music; there are special vinyl and CD releases, gigs and a whole bunch of stuff and it happens all over the world. Cool eh?

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #5 – SXSW 2012

April 11th, 2012

So James Monteith, intrepid TesseracT guitarist and Thrash Hits columnist found himself in Austin, Texas for the South By Southwest music festival again. He didn’t puke, but he did drink tequila, see a load of cool bands and hang out with loads of cool people. Cool. He’s written about it AND answered a question from the postbag. Whoop.

Progtology with James Monetieth Thrash Hits

After another eventful SXSW, I thought, “It’s time to write another column.” If you read my SXSW column last year (or have seen the countless comments referring to the incident), you may be aware of my minor vomit spillage on Thrash Hits Editor, Raz’s shoes in the Dirty Dog bar. As one who enjoys a little nostalgia, the temptation to relive the moment in the same venue at the Metal Hammer showcase, standing in the same spot as last year, was overwhelming.
