On paper, Flyleaf are a massive success. The Texans have owned huge swathes of the American charts for years, and toured with some of your favorite bands. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why – their formula is a surefire winner. Imagine if Nickelback matador Chad Kroeger impregnated Avril Levigne multiple times, and Avril then gave birth to an angry Brady Bunch. It’s this formidable blueprint the has carried Flyleaf all the way to album number three – New Horizons.

Viking Metal and Christianity: A Most Misunderstood Relationship

March 8th, 2012

Amon Amarth Viking Metal Thrash Hits

David Keevill studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge. That means he knows his stuff when it comes to actual, really-real Vikings. Since both we and he are pedantic sorts, we browbeat him into writing an explanation as to on why anti-Christian imagery in Viking Metal is a horrible anachronism. Yeah, serious intellectual stuff! Bet you weren’t expecting that on Thrash Hits, right?

Sunday Spotify Slaylist: Easter Special

April 4th, 2010

It’s Easter – if you’ve got any sense you’re in a chocolate-coma right now. Unless you’ve like our man Tom Dare, in which case you’re emailing us Satanic heavy metal Slaylists of the most blasphemous kind imaginable.

Heavy Metal doesn’t really “do” Easter that well. Oh, we’re sure there’s probably some Christian Metal Bands out there singing about the Last Supper and the Resurrection and all that, but Christian Metal is basically 99% bollocks, and we sure as shit weren’t going to make a Slaylist full of that.

But what Metal does do well is is blasphemy, satanism, paganism, atheism and stuff that in some way promotes something that the Pope would strongly disapprove of. Much in the way the rest of the right-thinking world disapproves of covering-up institutionalised paedophilia. OhYesWeJustWentThere.

This latest effort from metalcore troupe, The Devil Wears Prada, debuted in the US charts at number 11, and it’s a little pondersome as to why. Maybe some of the more naïve members of the public picked up a copy thinking it was Anne Hathaway singing about her film, shoes and frilly frocks, but who knows?

2008 into 2009: Architects

December 22nd, 2008

So many bands we’ve been speaking to have been tipping Architects to have a massive year in 2009 with their third album, Hollow Crown. We speak to guitarist, Tom Searle about 2008.

architects century media tom barnes 2008 thrash hits

What was your highlight of 2008?
Signing to Century Media, finishing our new album and touring Europe on the Never Say Die tour – especially the London date at the Forum, which was the best show we’ve ever played as a band!

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
There’s been some pretty rough times this year, but I’d have to say that the trailer park we stayed in one night in nowheresville, USA was a particular low point.
