Damnation Festival 2013 Thrash Hits

It’s just a few short weeks away now – Damnation Festival 2013 is (once again) going to be the heavy music event of the Winter here in the UK. There aren’t many bands 20 years into their career producing their very best work, but Katatonia’s creativity curve has been consistently on the rise for the last decade. Their previous album, Night Is The New Day, was widely hailed as their career-best, despite their move in more melodic, less metallic directions. Three years on, they’ve changed subtly directions again with ninth album Dead End Kings, and it’s probably not what you might think.

April 1st, 2012

Queen Brian May Adam Lambert CANCELLED Thrash Hits

There’s not denying it – for UK rock fans, the cancellation of Sonisphere 2012 was the biggest news story this week. Unless something incredibly dramatic happens later this year, we’d put good money on it being one of – if not the – biggest news story of the entire year. It’s because it’s such a momentous news event that we’re dedicating this week’s Sunday Slaylist to the acts that were supposed to be performing at Knebworth this Summer…only with an extra little twist….

By now, you’re probably aware Woods Of Ypres mainman David Gold died on 21 December 2011. What was meant to be the first album he’d have had significant label backing for after plugging away in the Canadian underground for a decade, has instead turned out to be his last. This is obviously a delicate record to analyse, but whatever the background, an album has to stand up on its own merit – the music is either good or it’s not. Only in this particular case, there’s a sizeable caveat. [Read more →]

The band is clearly bursting with genuinely great ideas, but have arrived at a rather confused end point.
