Look, we know it’s nearly Christmas, but that doesn’t mean that the relentless touring machine at the heart of heavy metal has stopped yet. Kreator and Arch Enemy have only just finished a punishing double-headliner tour. We sent Pete Long along to headbang himself senseless at the London leg of the tour.

6 things we learnt while watching Arch Enemy and Kreator in London:

Live: Behemoth @ London Kentish Town Forum – 10 February 2014

February 14th, 2014

Behemoth at Bloodstock Open Air 2012 by Gary Wolstenholme (because we don't have a London gig shot, OBVS)

With their new album The Satanist only just released (and already getting plenty of plaudits), Behemoth came to London this week to headline a show on top of a stacked bill of bands to remind people why it’s already being touted as an early contender for one of the albums of the year. Okay, technically it was a co-headline with Cradle of Filth, but there was no argument over who was going on last. Cheryl Carter hit the Kentish Town Forum early doors to catch the whole show. Well, nearly the whole show.

Motionless in White band promo photo thrash hits 2013

The triple threat of Motionless in White, The Defiled and Glamour of the Kill might give some people nightmares about bad haircuts and too much make-up, but for others it’s a goth-fuelled dream. Those people were all in Kentish Town watching the gig with Gavin Lloyd, who’s also bang up for dreaming about goths. And then writing about them.

If it’s somehow passed you by, Sound City Players is the latest super-super-group led by Dave Grohl. Centred around the legendary Sound City Studio, the band brings together loads of the artists featured in the wonderful feature-length documentary written and directed by Grohl. That they are all playing live with a record for sale as well makes it a 360-degree experience. We saw the film, got the album and went to the gig. Here’s a review of the last bit.

Live: Arch Enemy @ Kentish Town Forum – Saturday 27 November 2010

November 30th, 2010

Remember that volcanic ash cloud that balls’d up every plane flight in Western Europe earlier this year? Tom Dare does – the bloody thing stopped Arch Enemy coming to town. Last weekend he busted down to their rescheduled gig.

I have a dream. That one day, rock writers may go to a gig at The Kentish Town Forum and not bitch about sound problems. That every band will come on and sound crystal clear and at a respectable volume. That day is not today, however – and is probably further away than the day The Horned One toddles off to work driving a snow plough whistling ‘I Feel Pretty’ – but most of the bands come as close to overcoming these problems as you could really ask of them.

Live: Alice In Chains @ London Kentish Town HMV Forum – Tuesday, 17 November 2009

All I’d been thinking about since Bonfire Night was seeing Alice In Chains live in London. They’re the grunge band for metallers. They’re the band with some of the most tortured lyrics in the history of rock n’ roll. Even without Layne Staley’s genius, they are Alice In Chains. This is one of my favourite bands of all time. I could not wait.

Live: Deftones @ London Kentish Town Forum – Thursday, 27 August 2009

September 1st, 2009

When the mighty Deftones strolled into town to play a warm-up show before their Reading & Leeds Festival appearances, Amit Sharma was down the front, up the side and slumped at the back. It was a good show.

It’s pretty obvious this sticky Thursday evening in London Town that the hottest ticket going is for Deftones’ Reading Festival warm up show at the Kentish Town Forum. It’s been over two years since the Sacramento quintet graced our shores and tickets were snapped up pretty quick given that this venue is less than half the size of Brixton Academy where they usually perform.
