WIN: a pair of tickets to Arcane Roots’ Kerrang! Awards show at the Camden Barfly

Arcane Roots are the kind of band you should like if you like the clever-clever bits of Biffy Clyro (but not the nice-nice bits about Biffy Clyro) combined with the sharper bits of Muse (without the vibrato histrionics that annoy us about Muse). They’ve recently signed to PIAS, and next month they’re put out a mini album by the name of Left Fire. And to celebrate that fact, they’ve given us a pair of tickets to give away to their Kerrang! Awards Show gig at the Camden Barfly on 05 June 2012. You’d have to be pretty lazy not to click the ‘Read More’ button and to enter our competition to win them. Unless you live somewhere that isn’t near London, we suppose.

Whatever. It’s free gig tickets. Stop complaining and enter the competition!

Live + Photos: Avenged Sevenfold & Year Long Disaster @ London ULU – 20 August 2008

August 28th, 2008

Avenged Sevenfold are used to playing to thousands of metallers but tonight they’re playing to just hundreds. Lynsey Wright was there to see it but she wasn’t throwing any underwear at the renowed lotharios…

Avenged Sevenfold Thrash Hits

The final instalment of the Kerrang Awards’ week of shows sees LA’s Year Long Disaster playing tracks from their latest album and entertaining the ram-packed ULU as the opener for headline act Avenged Sevenfold.

Year Long Disaster have previously toured with the likes of Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver so are well versed in warming-up crowds.

They certainly didn’t disappoint as they dose them up with their own brand of hard rock and leaving the audience sweaty and all the more ready for the headliners.

Avenged Sevenfold’s set is short and sharp but not so sweet. Bombarded with all manner of ladies undergarments from the minute they walk on stage, it’s clear this band have a reputation preceding them.

Playing two covers, one being a ferocious and long-standing favourite of theirs, Walk by Pantera, the other, a punchy version of NOFX’s Linoleum, there is something for even the most sceptical audience member.

They even get a little help from Matt Tuck of Bullet For My Valentine who comes on for a verse of Walk seemingly just to further prove their ‘rock gods’ status.

Vocalist, M. Shadows struts around the stage like he means it throughout their set and A7X exit the stage to a foray of cheers and applause from the rock-riled crowd.

Live + Photos: Alexisonfire, The Ghost Of A Thousand & Dead Swans @ London Camden Barfly – 17 August 2008

When Alexisonfire hit town to play a tiny, intimate Kerrang! Awards Show in north London, Lynsey Wright made sure she was right down the front for Thrash Hits .com with her camera.

Dead Swans hit the stage running; launching straight into fierce, full-tempo hardcore. This band doesn’t miss a beat.

Brighton band the Ghost of a Thousand take to the stage next, and do nothing to calm the already overexcited crowd down.

Vocalist, Tom Lacey is a livewire on stage. Running from stage to barrier and back it’s hard to keep-up but it fits the fast-paced, hardcore music that this band are specialists of.

An over-sold Barfly is bursting at the cracks in the walls by the time the headliners, Alexisonfire, are due to appear and they certainly don’t mess about.

Within seconds of appearing onstage they launch into their first grinding hit; driving the largely underage crowd into a frenzy. The entire room sings along to both the melodic parts of Dallas Green and the raw screams of a shirtless George Pettit.

They plough their way through songs from both Crisis and Watch Out and even debut an as-yet-unnamed song from the forthcoming record, jokingly titled ‘Wade owns England’.

The best surprise of the evening was the stage invasion during the encore. Almost the entire crowd were clambering over the barrier, limbs flailing, attempting to join their heroes on stage and to ensure they have something to tell the kids in the playground tomorrow.
