For a reluctant office-worker stuck on life’s treadmill, suffering from an almost complete apathy towards anything in his day-to-day routine, Årabrot will be a hard sell. Social lives consisting of little more than evenings spent slouched in a Sam Smith’s pub and a once-a-week visit to Nandos seem a little out of touch with Årabrot, who recently returned to society having withdrawn to an abandoned church in Sweden to play “mind games with the devil” and formulate ideas for their sixth, self-titled studio album.

It’s interesting that two of the most notable alumni of that Georgia sludge scene – Baroness and Mastodon – have moved a little away from their more crushing roots in recent years, and had success by doing so. Another distinguished graduate, Kylesa, have found their own, very different path for sixth album Ultraviolet. It’s individual, distinctively theirs and not quite what you expect.

It’s also bloody heavy and pretty metal.

Sonisphere Festival 2011: Interviews, Photos, Setlists – it’s all here

July 27th, 2011

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here.

All our work from Sonisphere Festival 2011 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Individual band coverage (interviews, photos, setlists and some tiny reviews), rumours, drinking games, stage times, dodgy photos of as many sexy ladies in various states of safe-for-work undress as we can legitimately get away with? It’s all here.

Wasting no time with releasing a new album a mere 18 months after it’s predecessor, it’s great to see Kylesa acting with the urgency needed for a band to break through to the next level. From the moment you hear those signature dual drum tracks in the opening build up of ‘Tired Climb’, it’s clear that this could be the album that takes them very far indeed.

The Month In Metal: July

July 1st, 2009

Are we really half way through 2009 already? Apparently so. Feeling confused about the six months just gone, and the six left to go? Thrash Hits is here to guide you – well, through the next four weeks, at least.

Events
For those of you lucky enought to live alongside Thrash Hits in London town, tonight sees the launch of Someone’s Yelling Fire, a new punk/hardcore/metal/screamo/emo night at the recently-reopened Highbury Garage. Get there early enough and you’ll be able to catch live sets from The Xcerts, Save Your Breath and Flood of Red. Get their later, and you get to see Thrash Hits staffers collapse at the bar following an excess of beers. Double trouble! And just a fiver to boot.

In a scene that is currently being almost burnt out by a barrage of bands attempting to shred, thrash and scream-core their way into the shallows of notoriety, there are few bands like Kylesa. Rising from the ashes of this sort of despair is the quirky, avant-garde creativity of Static Tensions.

This is the longest the band has been without releasing a new record. What have you been doing?

“We’ve never had this much time off touring before. Normally we’ll just take two months off to write and record but this time we took a whole year. I bought a bunch of microphones and we got an eight-track recorder for our rehearsal space and we started plugging away riffs and writing skeleton songs with drums and guitars. We even started adding some vocals. We’ve never done stuff like that before.”

Interview: Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher – “I’ve been sober for four months.”

March 9th, 2009

Ahead of the release of Mastodon’s fourth album, Crack The Skye, Raziq Rauf caught up with guitarist Bill Kelliher for a chat. In this first part he spoke of his 2008 hospitalisation and he gave us a lovely Sonisphere exclusive.

You’ve been announced as part of the fantastic Sonisphere lineup. Are you planning anything special?

“We got to meet Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy and he was one of the coolest fucking guys I’ve ever met – we just joked around and talked shit. Brent and I picked up acoustic guitars with Scott and we played ‘The Emerald’ together and it was great. He even gave me his email! We were talking about having him onstage to play with us at Knebworth and we’ll play ‘The Emerald’. We’ll have three guitar solos from three different guitar players up there and we’ll extend it. He seemed joyous about it.”
