Heavy Metal Sandwich 007: Tyler Carter + Michael Bohn of Issues

August 29th, 2014

The sandwich is possibly the greatest food-based invention. We need to be able to eat and post on Facebook at the same time. Sandwiches allow us to do this. The best thing about sandwiches, however, is that anybody can eat them. Vegetarian? Put some more salad in. Belly doesn’t like wheat? Use some gluten-free bread then! And everybody has a favourite sandwich. Even bands…

Issues just played Reading & Leeds Festivals to a lot of people but a long, long time ago, we asked them the ultimate question: What is your favourite sandwich? Clearly, Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn eat a lot of sandwiches because they were very indecisive.

There are over 200 artists performing at Reading Festival. Assuming you’re not one of those pricks that goes to a festival just to see the headliners, that’s a hell of a lot of bands you don’t (yet) give a shit about to trawl through in the hope of finding your new love. Plus, you’ve got a job, pubs exist and you don’t even have a tent yet, so time is in short supply. That’s why we exist. We’re here to make sure that you don’t settle on wandering around in a field, blindly hoping to stumble upon greatness but settling on Deaf Havana or, even worse… Mallory Knox. Here are our top tips. Some are new bands and others are just great. Also, there are 12.

“I f*cking hate Blink 182.” – Reading & Leeds 2014 headliners don’t satisfy all

December 6th, 2013

When the Reading & Leeds Festival line-up was announced and Blink 182 were the first headliners to be unveiled, a lot of people were grateful that it was a rock-oriented band even if they are a reformed dinosaur rather than anything fresh. Tomas Doyle, however, didn’t take any positives from it at all and so he mounted his soapbox once again…

I fucking hate Blink 182. “Oh how can you hate Blink 182, Tom? They’re a really big and important band and that.” First things first, loads of stuff is big, that doesn’t make it important. Michael McIntyre is big but at an artistic level he is colossally unimportant and colossally unfunny – just like Blink 182.

Reading Festival 2013 in review (+ some photos)

Reading Festival is a great festival. We go every year. We get drunk and we see as many bands as is feasibly, possibly doable. Occasionally, we remain lucid enough to actually take note of what’s going on around us and it’s at those moments that we made mental notes that we forget.

Anyhow, here are some things that happened that we’re going to talk about. Some of it is directly about bands but some of it might seem like constructive criticism that we should probably send straight to the promoter for him to ignore completely. We prefer it when you ignore us completely, so here goes.

It’s Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend. You knew that, right? Well, it’s that fact as to why the BBC Radio 1 Review Show are having a festival special this evening, and they’ve only gone and invited us back on to mouth off about a whole load of new tracks from the bands playing at the festivals this year. Our Deputy Editor, Hugh Platt, is back on as a guest of Edith Bowman alongside Mallory Knox’s Sam Douglas – tune your radio (or more likely, your web browser) in to Radio 1 at 9pm BST to hear his mouth flapping and his opinions leak out all over the airwaves.

Reading & Leeds Festival 2013 Thrash Hits

With the August Bank Holiday weekend rapidly approaching, Reading & Leeds Festivals are once again upon us. As with every year, Reading & Leeds have a bit fat dollop of heaviness in among the landfill indie, so for this week’s Sunday Slaylist we’ve put together a Spotify playlist of the hardest and heaviest from their 2013 line-ups.

Mastodon at Leeds Festival 2012 by Gobinder Jhitta Thrash Hits

In addition to those sweet as you like on-stage photos of Cancer Bats’ Main Stage triumph we showed you last weekend, our man Gobinder Jhitta took a shedload of photos at this year’s Leeds Festival. We basically gave him free rein to go shoot whatever and whoever he wanted, and he didn’t let us down – pretty much every band we ranted and/or raved about in our post-Reading & Leeds Festival podcast is featured in his gallery, which you can check out after the jump.

Cancer Bats at Leeds Festival 2012 by Gobinder Jhitta

Cancer Bats might have missed their chance to pop their Main Stage cherry at Download Festival 2012 (cheers for that, British weather), but Leeds Festival 2012 was a different story. In front of the joint-biggest crowd of their career (tied with Leeds’ sister-festival, Reading, of course), Liam Cormier and co. smashed it. Lucky for us, our man Gobinder Jhitta was on hand to document their victory with his camera – and he did so from onstage.
