If you’re excited by the prospect of Corrupt Moral Altar‘s first full album, chances are it’s due to the feral rage that suffused their two previous EPs. The sludge-tinged grindcore of Whiskey Sierra and Luciferian Deathcult were the aural equivalent of a rusty steel bolt through the neck.

It’s probably going to make some of people unhappy then that Mechanical Tides is a marked evolution from that sound.

by David Keevill

Nostalgia is a soft-edged, sepia tinted arcadia that has increasingly been used by musicians to swerve listeners away from the rapid self-consumption of the metal world. For the less inspired, vapidly imitating the past rarely produces anything other than a cheap Instagram effect that lies on top of average music like an oil slick on water.

Kerrang! Tour 2014 Thrash Hits

Sometimes, things go wrong. Things went wrong when we sent our man in Liverpool, Matt Thomas, along to photograph the Limp Bizkit-headlined Kerrang! Tour 2014. Some wires got crossed somewhere, and whole everyone else in Liverpool with a camera was allowed into the photopit to snap Fred Durst and co., we were barred and only allowed to snap the support acts – Crossfaith, Nekrogoblikon and Baby Godzilla.

Future Hits 147: Carnival Kids

Thrash Hits verdict: We always take note when a young Norwegian band plays with Gallows. Through this method we’ve found Wolves Like Us, Kvelertak and Blood Command from Norway way before we ought to have. Carnival Kids are another Norwegian band and they played with Gallows at the 100 Club earlier this year. It’s only reasonable that we spoke to guitarist, Jethro Fox about life as a Carnival Kid.

Bongripper at Liverpool Kazimier - 20 April 2013 by Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

The weather might’ve taken a sudden turn for the better here in the UK, but the one thing we can always count on is that we’re never far from gangs of young men making surly, dark, and altogether stormy music. Such is the doom thrown out by Bongripper and Conan. Our man around the North West, Matt Thomas, was on hand to snap the lot of them when they came to Liverpool.

Wet Nuns combo live at Liverpool Sound City c/o Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

Liverpool Sound City is what happens when a load of people get together and decide to host a 3-day music/tech conference in the North of England. Basically – it’s what The Great Escape is to the South, and what In The City used to be for Manchester. It’s pretty damn sweet.

When we heard that one of our previous Future Hits subjects, the sleazily, diesel-powered heay blues duo that is Wet Nuns, were one of the bands playing over the weekend, we shouted at our Liverpool-based snapper, Matt Thomas, to go snap us some photos.

Sylosis live at Liverpool O2 Academy 2 on 1st May 2012 c/o Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

Those not-nearly-as-praised-as-they-ought-to-be Reading metallers, Sylosis, finished their final UK tour before releasing their as-yet-untitled third studio album. Okay, so Sylosis do get a lot of praise, but that’s because they a) awesome, and b) they keep getting more awesome, which means c) that they deserve even more praise than they get already.

Anyway, we made sure our Liverpool snapper, Matt Thomas, was in place to snap the whole shebang when it rolled into his hometown.

Interview: Vincent Cavanagh from Anathema on Weather Systems, subterranean recording, and on what’s so special about KSCOPE

Anathema promo photo 2012 Thrash Hits

Last week, long-running gothicly-tinged progsters, Anathema, released Weather Systems, the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2010’s critical smash, We’re Here Because We’re Here. This gave us the perfect excuse to give the band’s frontman, Vincent Cavanagh, a call, and hope that our resident Anathema fanboy, Hugh Platt, wouldn’t get so excited that he’d forget all his carefully researched questions.

Future Hits 113: Conan

Conan

From: Liverpool, UK
Lazy equation: (Sleep + Batillus) x as many MATAMP amps as you can get your hands on.

Thrash Hits Verdict: We first became aware of Conan last year, when one of our photographers, Matt Thomas, started singing their praises at us. Well, when say “singing”, we really mean “sent us an email”. Given that like Conan, he’s based up in Liverpool, he’s far too far away from us for us to hear him if he did start singing. Conan on the other hand….let’s just say when they play live, you can probably hear them on the other side of the planet. However it was a result of their talents – rather than their volume – that will see the trio support the legendary Sleep over in Norway later this year. We got on the blower to the band’s guitarist/vocalist, Jon Davis, to find out what it’s like when your idols want you to open shows for them.

Interview: Anathema – Danny Cavanagh on inspiration, evolution and being awesome

March 15th, 2011

Just before we saw Anathema live in London at King’s Cross Scala, we caught up with the Liverpudlian Goth-turned-Prog rockers for a chat about stuff. Lead guitarist and songwriter, Daniel Cavanagh was the one who sat down with Amit Sharma to chat in-depth about all sorts from their latest album, We’re Because We’re Here to future plans.
