It’s time for The Great Escape 2011 so we’re off to Brighton for a few days to drink beer and get a dry face and fuzzy ears from watching bands while standing near to a large, salty body of water.

Because TGE is a big thing, there’s not very much metal going on so we thought we’d point out the token gigs of heaviness for you and list all the bands that we think are noteworthy PLUS when and where they’re playing.

There is nothing here that resembles a Turisas song.

Our resident London photographer, Ben Gibson is a massive emo. This has led to him being in love with Essex emos, We Are The Ocean. They released their second album, Go Now And Live last week and they coincidentally played a headline show in Camden last week as well with Watford emos, Lower Than Atlantis and French hardcore lot, Vera – the odd ones out by not being even vaguely wet sounding. Ben went and took photos.

Nuance is a wonderful thing. It can turn a cheeky wink into a conspiratorial sign, a smile into a sarcastic dagger in the back of an enemy and a clap of appreciation is easily slowed into a mocking clap of listless distain and indifference. Imagine a life without nuance, the world would keep spinning of course, but things would be, well, a lot duller – a lot less fun.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Probably the Never Say Die Tour – as it’s pretty fresh in my mind still – seeing Parkway Drive, Unearth and Architects on the same bill was incredible.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Missing seeing Alexisonfire at the Barfly as I had to go to work.
