Thrash Hits’ Favourite Gigs of 2013

December 12th, 2013

2013 thrash hits favourite gigs of the year

Part and parcel of being opinionated music lovers is that we go and experience lots of music in its natural habitat – on a stage – and then we decide how good it was. Some spectacles are so powerful that they evoke emotions strong enough to form memories through the drunkenness. It’s a rarity but that’s why some here have to name several before deciding upon their Favourite Gig of 2013. There is zero reason for you to be reading this but if you’ve read this far, you’ll get at least halfway down before clicking the cross.

Having headlined the Roundhouse in October, Devin Townsend returns to London in this special one-off show with Meshuggah. Let’s do this.

Pre-gig meal: Nando’s. Half chicken (medium) with corn, rice and halloumi.

Sunday Slaylist: Hevy Festival 2012

July 29th, 2012

Hevy Festival 2012 Thrash Hits

We were half tempted to make a sports-themed Slaylist this week – what with the Olympics kicking off in our home city of London and all that – but then we realised that other than ‘Running Free’ and a handful of other tracks, we’d really be scraping the barrel when it came to coming up with valid tracks for it. So instead we fell back on an old favourite: the festival Slaylist. Given that Hevy Festival 2012 is a mere five days away, it was the obvious candidate.

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

This week’s podcast has Tom Doyle joinging Hugh back in the Thrash Hits studio, and this week they’re taking a long hard look at the line-up for Hevy Festival 2012. As the UK’s up-and-coming hardcore, punk and rock festival prepares for its fourth year, we’re looking at the headliners, our top picks from lower down the bill, the unusual layout for this year’s festival, as well as baselessly speculating on the potential this young festival upstart has for the future. Oh, and mouthing off about a couple of bands. Y’know – the usual.

It is easy to wonder how on earth Djent will be looked back on in a decades time. It wouldn’t be an enormous leap of imagination to see it bearing the brunt of similar derision that nu-metal now faces some 10 years or so after that fads heyday – both comprise dudes in ill fitting clothes producing music predominantly for other dudes in ill fitting clothes with anguished “I won’t clean up my bedroom!” rapping now replaced by an equally unhealthy desire to hermetically seal oneself in a practice room and master the art of playing in 13/24.

Devin Townsend plays Deconstruction Thrash Hits

It’s night no.3 of Devin Townsend’s four night London residency under the An Evening with The Devin Townsend Project banner, and tonight was the night things really got weird. When you’re talking about Devin Townsend, that’s some claim. With Deconstruction by far the most guest-musician stuffed record from Townsend’s 4-album series, just how was he going to reproduce it all live? Ruth Booth was on hand to find out.
