Of the big four metal bands of the modern era (Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Five Finger Death Punch, and Trivium) it is Trivium who are the most worthy. They don’t have the cheesy emptiness of the Welshmen, they’ve stopped ripping off Metallica quite as blatantly as Avenged Sevenfold are doing now and they’re not political knuckle-draggers like Five Finger Death Punch.

Basically, as fashionable as it is to suggest that none of them are metal enough to be spoken of in the same breath as the likes of Metallica and Pantera, Trivium, by simply being a bunch of metallers playing metal for metallers, have got the least to dislike about them. By a long way.

COROT-3b Prize Sunday Slaylist Thrash Hits

Yes, yes, yes, the Mercury Prize doesn’t have any metal in it. Yes, yes, yes, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Yes, yes, yes, that hasn’t stopped us resurrecting the COROT-3b Prize to celebrate a dozen great British metal albums from the last 12 months. Go click that link if you need an explanation why we called that. Everyone else: go click the “Read More” link and go listen to our Sunday Spotify Slaylist of this year’s COROT-3b nominees.

There are well over 250 bands performing over the August Bank Holiday weekend in both Reading and Leeds with dozens of comedians and DJs on top. “Former Metallica bass player Jason Newsted”. “Ex ‘tallica bass man Jason Newsted”. “Newsted, the band formed by one time Metallica five-stringer…” Apparently, Jason Newsted used to be in another band. More specifically for those just getting into metal or the less observant amongst you, he used to be in The Biggest Heavy Band Of All Time.

SLAYER: Trve Kvlt legends or Hipster’s choice?

God Listens To Slayer Thrash Hits

It’s a curious phenomenon. Slayer are unparalleled in their support. Not only are they the metaller’s metal band but they’ve also captured the attention of people who possibly weren’t even born when Reign In Blood was released.

The thrash legends are back in the UK this weekend, headlining Bloodstock Festival 2013. Last May they performed at Alexandra Palace as part of All Tomorrow’s Parties’ I’ll Be Your Mirror event. While Bloodstock Open Air is the preserve of the staunchest metal community in the world, ATP events tend to draw those in who are one step ahead of the madding crowd.

Maybe the slow burning classic rock jams of Down just aren’t cathartic enough for Philip. Maybe the increased vigour that he’s been displaying through Housecore Records has rekindled something deep inside one of the most metal hearts stalking our stages these days. Either way, Walk Through Exits Only is a heavy metal beast of an album.

It’s interesting that two of the most notable alumni of that Georgia sludge scene – Baroness and Mastodon – have moved a little away from their more crushing roots in recent years, and had success by doing so. Another distinguished graduate, Kylesa, have found their own, very different path for sixth album Ultraviolet. It’s individual, distinctively theirs and not quite what you expect.

It’s also bloody heavy and pretty metal.

SXSW 2013: the best of the UK’s heavy music in Austin

March 6th, 2013

SXSW 2013 south by southwest 2013 thrash hits logo

South By Southwest is a wonderful place where Foo Fighters play on the patio of a bar and Kvelertak play five shows in three days and we see them all by dumb luck. While the big picture says SXSW is about bands for radio, the underground says it’s all about metal. That’s why the pizza shop on 6th St is called Hoek’s Death Metal Pizza and has a dozen metal bands playing in its backyard every day. There are also some excellent bands flying over to Austin from the UK. Here’s a rundown of the seven that we could find.

With their fourth album, Sempiternal, released in April, this is one of the most talked about bands around. We spoke to Bring Me The Horizon about all the hard work Oli’s done to make his vocals good enough, what the album is really about, how Jordan Fish joining the band has affected their sound and how they’ve used the criticism they’ve received over the years to their advantage. Could BMTH become the biggest extreme metal band in Britain?

Top 6: Metal Bands @ By:Larm 2013

February 11th, 2013

by:larm festival 2013 oslo norway logo thrash hits bylarm

It appears that Finland is the most metal country in the world, but Norway is unquestionably the home of black metal, which is pretty metal. Norway is also home to By:Larm Festival, which is occurring on 13-16 February in Oslo. It’s a great place for showcasing the finest in fresh Scandinavian talent of all genres, but obviously there’s loads of metal there.

We’d have made a nifty “Thrash Hits goes to By:Larm” header, but we’re not going. However, while you don’t need telling to go and see bands like Blood Command, Turbonegro and Shining, we can still suggest some other bands you should go and see. So…
