Attaching the name “Mike Patton” to a project can make a lot of us lose most, if not all critical faculties about music. And when it comes to stepping out of our comfort zones, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. tētēma is the latest project from avant-garde composer Anthony Pateras – and their first output, Geocidal, a heady hyper-future blend of earth-conscious electronica and analogue sound. Patton serves as human instrument – but one that doesn’t steal the scene as much as you’d expect.

Pink Floyd 2014 promo photo Thrash Hits

We’re starting something new here at Thrash Hits. We’ve asked some of our favourite writers to put together some monthly columns, focussing in on the genres they’re most passionate about. We’re kicking off this new series with David Keevill taking on what’s been going on in Prog over the last month or so. Take it away, David….

The Thrash Hits Top 20 Albums of 2013

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

Like any artform, music is not a competition. There is only good and bad music and that categorisation in itself is all down to subjective taste. However, in a bid for scientific rigour; some quantitative analysis to fortify the qualitative spiels, we’ve asked all the Thrash Hits contributors to list their favourite albums of 2013. Yeah, it’s here to boost our egos by claiming what we say is best and it’ll surely get some good clicks and you may (rightly) point out that it’s just another list but, at the very least, you might see an album that you’ve never heard of and think about buying it. That would be cool.

Reading Festival 2013 in review (+ some photos)

August 28th, 2013

Reading Festival is a great festival. We go every year. We get drunk and we see as many bands as is feasibly, possibly doable. Occasionally, we remain lucid enough to actually take note of what’s going on around us and it’s at those moments that we made mental notes that we forget.

Anyhow, here are some things that happened that we’re going to talk about. Some of it is directly about bands but some of it might seem like constructive criticism that we should probably send straight to the promoter for him to ignore completely. We prefer it when you ignore us completely, so here goes.

Mike Patton could record himself belching into a dictaphone and stick some reverb on it and fans would still clamour over it, such is the frenzy the man causes. Oddfellows isn’t like that though, thankfully, or unfortunately (depending on how broken you are). Out of the gazillion projects he’s  shrieked and gurgled on, Tomahawk is the one most likely to appeal to your average Faith No More listening gumby, being as they are, a relatively straightforward rock band, although they’d still make a litany of Foo Fighters fans feel dumber than they already are.

It really is saying something if you have to check Mike Patton against the eccentricity scale to see if he’s wandered past “manically kooky” and into the realms of “wobble custard emu”. This is a man who’s partially responsible for Faith No More following up The Real Thing with Angle Dust – an album as hooky as it is strange. It captures the eternally contrarian attitude of a man who had the world within his grasp, and quite happily let it slip through his fingers. Yes, I think it’s safe to say that Mike Patton is a man quite happy to spend every minute of every day defying the world’s expectations.

Faith No More to play shows in London and Scotland before Download Festival

April 23rd, 2009

Don’t ask us how we know. We shouldn’t know. The person we heard it from shouldn’t have told us. And they’re not supposed to know about it either. What in the name of unholy Hell are we on about? Well, Thrash Hits has heard from a reputable source that Faith No More are playing shows in both London and Scotland in the week prior to their headline slot at this year’s Download Festival.
