Frank Iero is pissed off. Not because of the demise of My Chemical Romance, but because he has a stomach-ache. An all-encompassing, inescapable stomach-ache so beastly that it inspired an entire album. To take his mind off the pain of an increasingly painful digestive disorder, Iero retreated to his basement studio and composed music that was as jagged and raw as his internal discomfort.

Crown The Empire 2014 Alternative Press photo shoot Thrash Hits

Last month, Alternative Press – one of America’s biggest rock music magazines put Crown The Empire on their cover for the second time in little over a year. This is a band that there has been a lot of buzz around stateside for a while now, yet there has been barely any coverage of them in the UK rock media. We put Gavin Lloyd on the case to investigate whether or not this Texas six-piece are on track to becoming a global phenomenon.

“Why I hate Kurt Cobain…”

July 31st, 2013

With the news that a 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana‘s In Utero is due on 23 September 2013, featuring over 70 “remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased, and live recordings”, we thought it was a good time to delve into the world of the grunge overlords and, in particular, Nirvana’s iconic frontman, Kurt Cobain. Despite still appearing on the t-shirts of many people who don’t actually own a Nirvana album, not everybody loves them.

Kurt Cobain Jawbreaker Thrash Hits

Cobain is not really that divisive a character, but who better to ask for an opinion on a rock star than Gavin “I ♥ Ronnie Radke” Lloyd? Nobody – once you read this, you will agree – but if you are a fan of Gavin’s last article, this one might surprise you somewhat…

My Chemical Romance split-up Thrash Hits

The one thing that is always inevitable in life is that things come to an end. In the wee small hours yesterday, My Chemical Romance announced via their website that they were splitting up. The one-time Download Festival headliners – whether you loved or loathed them – were undeniably one of the biggest rock bands of the last decade. To that end, this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist is dedicated to the band that made it cool to hate on “emo”.

Regular readers of Thrash Hits will remember we ran this photo a while ago, with a certain amount of disbelief. With his penchant for wry, dark romance, if Alkaline Trio’s frontman took a cue from any Lost Boys, our money would’ve been on these ones. But, aside from possible sponsorship by the local bird sanctuary, this photo told us two crucial things about Matt Skiba’s new project.

Top 6: Raz’s Every Time I Die t-shirts

March 8th, 2012

It’s the way bands make a lot of their money. It’s a way of proudly displaying that you like a band. It’s a piece of clothing that every right-thinking person owns at least one of. Yeah, the humble band t-shirt. I have two deep drawers full of the damned things. Six of which have Every Time I Die emblazoned upon them. Here’s a crap story about how I came to own them all…

Who do you want the final Download Festival 2011 headliner to be?

February 16th, 2011

the Darkness justin hawkins band promo photo thrash hits

Sometimes people like to whisper in our ears and sometimes we are just better at the internet than other people. This all leads to us hearing about stuff way before we’re meant to. That’s how we got the scoops on Metallica and Linkin Park headlining Sonisphere Festival 2009 as well as when AC/DC self-confirmed Download Festival 2010.

This time, a little whisper found its way into our stupid heads about Def Leppard and The Darkness co-headlining Download Festival 2011. There’s a tiny little more to it than just a silly rumour though. It just depends on how hard you look…

Who do you want to see headline the summer festivals in 2011?

November 18th, 2010

With Andy Copping Twittering about having “two Download headliners locked in” and Sonisphere’s people flyering at the Deftones gig in Brixton last night, the UK summer festival season of 2011 is well and truly under way.

But who’s gonna be headlining? That’s what everyone really cares about. Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden and Foo Fighters are all surely out of the festival picture seeing as they’ve got their own massive shows to sell but there are still plenty of options.

My Chemical Romance return with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. We heard it, watched it, reviewed it

October 29th, 2010

We were at London Hammersmith Apollo last weekend to watch My Chemical Romance play an intimate show to 5,000 screaming girls. The main intention was to hear MCR play some new songs, which they did. They played four of them.

In a 22-song set, four new tracks is perfectly reasonable, especially as they walked onstage in their new Varsity-inspired look (which is sure to revitalise sales at American Apparel over the coming months) to sing ‘Na Na Na’. Retro ice hockey shirts FTW, etc etc.

Yeah, that’s not completely true. My Chemical Romance are going to be playing to 85,000 people in Wembley Stadium on 31 October 2010 but they’re not headlining. Not is it a Hallowe’en party. Instead, they’re the pre-match entertainment for an NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. American Football in London. They’re infiltrating!
