If you’re excited by the prospect of Corrupt Moral Altar‘s first full album, chances are it’s due to the feral rage that suffused their two previous EPs. The sludge-tinged grindcore of Whiskey Sierra and Luciferian Deathcult were the aural equivalent of a rusty steel bolt through the neck.

It’s probably going to make some of people unhappy then that Mechanical Tides is a marked evolution from that sound.

Future Hits 141: Bone Sickness

May 2nd, 2013

Bone Sickness band promo photo washington death metal thrash hits 2013

Bone Sickness
From: Olympia, Washington, USA
Lazy equation: Old school death metal + a soupcon of extreme hardcore
URL: Facebook

Thrash Hits verdict: When we first heard Bone Sickness via a couple of crummy YouTubings of a house show, we knew that they were a great prospect. Once we got in touch and did this interview it was clear that their no-nonsense death metal is as influenced by not wanting to do certain things as it is by their musical heroes. In terms of what their influences are, we’ll do you the service of not listing the 100 bands they gave us and just assure you that their knowledge of death metal is vast, deep and loving. The elements of grindcore and extreme hardcore found in their music add something extra; something special. This quartet, all in their early-to-mid-20s could really be onto something. Keep your ears peeled.

Video: ‘Analysis Paralyis’ by Napalm Death – awesome track, cheapskate video.

February 29th, 2012

Napalm Death at Bloodstock by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

We’ve already gone on record stating how much we love Napalm Death‘s new album, Utilitarian. It’s pretty much the perfect rebuttal for anyone who claims that latter day Napalm Death isn’t as good as early Napalm Death. It’s a fearsome record, and Barney Greenway’s lyrics are perhaps among the sharpest and most eloquent the band have had in years.

Why they had to make such a cheapo-looking video for ‘Analysis Paralysis’, the first single to be taken from it though….

Napalm Death
Utilitarian

It may at first glance appear odd to say it, but Napalm Death have never quite got the credit they deserve. “How so?” you say. “They’re a legendary band hailed as the godfathers of their genre.” And you’re right – to the point it’s become a vacuous cliché. There are stock phrases that get spouted about Napalm (usually prefaced with some jovial reference to them being from Birmingham) that are all-too-frequently only empty reverence of Scum, FETO and at a pinch Harmony Corruption. The fact they’ve put out astonishing records for 20 years after that gets overlooked far too often. And that Utilitarian is furiously extreme in all new ways highlights why they’re as vital a band as they’ve ever been.

Future Hits 111: Selfless

Selfless

From: Birmingham, UK.
Lazy equation: (Knuckdust + Napalm Death) x one third of Fukpig.

Thrash Hits Verdict: There can be little doubt that the Midlands are the crucible that created heavy metal – forget the fact that it’s the birthplace of Black Sabbath – it’s where Napalm Death and a whole host of extreme and grind bands first played louder, faster, and noisier than anyone else in the UK. To this day, the region continues to throw up nasty little nuggets of noise for us – such as the short, sharp shocks served up by the old school ethos of Selfless. We caught up with band’s guitarist, Chris Selfless, for a little history lesson.

Album: Rotten Sound – Cursed

February 4th, 2011

Rotten Sound
Cursed
Relapse Records
15 March 2011

by Tom Dare

Grindcore’s ferocious formula doesn’t always lend itself to consistency or longevity, but Finland’s Rotten Sound are one of the shining exceptions. 18 years, seven long-plays and numerous EPs and splits after they first began, they’re still playing grindcore and, as new release Cursed proves, it’s still enough to make you want to demolish everything in sight.
