Roadburn Festival describe themselves as “Europe’s leading underground festival for psychedelic, avant-garde, doom or any other variation of leftfield sonic pleasures that push the boundaries of music.” It’s that offering that brought Rob McAuslan over the sea and back to the festival for his third consecutive visit – this year featuring line-up choices and a day of curation from one Mikael Åkerfeldt.

Remember Bastions? That band that we’ve told you about many, many times before, the band who we’ve urged you again and again to make the effort to go and see play live, ASA-‘effing-P? Well tonight they’re kicking off their first ever European tour. No longer are we urging just our British readers to get off their arses to go check out one of the best new British bands in years. Oh no. Now we’re urging the whole of bloody Europe to do so.

Asphyx have made more than a few comments on the state of death metal today since their latest (is this their fourth?) reformation. In a nutshell, they think it’s a bit sorry – too many bands forgetting that heavy metal’s most destructive subgenre is supposed to be enjoyable and have memorable riffs. They’ve even stated that Deathhammer, their eighth studio album, is so titled as to almost be a “How To” manual for death metal. If you’re going to make statements like that, you have to back it up. Deathhammer had better be something special.

Interview: Cerebral Bore on finding inspiration from everything from funny farts to good burgers

February 24th, 2012

Cerebral Bore 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

Last week you’ll have no doubt read us urging you to go check out ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’, the brand new track from three-quarters-Scottish-one-quarter-Dutch gore-minded upstarts, Cerebral Bore. And if you read any of the words that were alongside the bowel-threateningly aggressive death metal, you’ll know that this isn’t a cut off a forthcoming album or even an EP, but as a single. A single? Yes, and a non-album single at that. People still do those, apparently.

We figured this was more than enough of an excuse to catch up with the band’s guitarist/manager, Paul Mcguire, to find out not only why they’ve done this, but to grill him on everything else that’s been going on and is about to kick off over in the world of Cerebral Bore.

It’s the name. That’s it. Granted, there’s few better for a Textures album, with their penchant for taking threads of djent’s polyrhythmic metal and ambient sounds, and winding them ever tighter since 2003 debut Polars. You could talk about its applications to Cartesian philosophy, political theory, Yin and Yang, Thanatos and Eros, and the psychic war innate to every human being since time began. If that’s your bag.

But ‘Dualism’? It’s like Tom Waits releasing an album called Gravelly-voice Man, or Muse naming theirs Matt read this great theory about aliens in Machu Picchu. Or a Metallica record called Pissed-off Men, or Kings of Anger, or… oh. Right.

Heavy metal, horror and the occult have walked hand in hand since the first notes of Black Sabbath’s debut cranked out of whatever archaic stereograms were the order of the day back in 1970. And not much has changed some 40 years down the line.
