With their excellent debut album Rescue, Samoans captivated us with a fresh combination of dreamy vocals, soothing guitar melodies and occasional bursts of raw energy. Just off the back of their recent headline UK tour, we caught up with drummer Chris Rouse to find out more about the band, and to find out – among other things – what happens when you get caught doing the no-trousers-boogie at one of their shows.

Future Hits 194: Nexilva

Lazy equation: The atmosphere of a weird Japanese forests + Bleeding Through’isms + throatpunching.

Eschewing the diet of nothing bu tired, reskinned deathcore breakdowns that’s been the binge-diet of so much of the UK’s underscene, Sunderland five-piece Nexilva balance their death metal brawn with some old-skool Bleeding Through-esque ambient synths and guitar tricks. That makes them an interesting proposition for those who prefer a cerebral edge to their m0sh, and was more than enough reason for our man Josh Graham to call up their drummer Connor Jobes to get the skinny.

Future Hits 192: Thought Forms

Lazy equation: Aberrant soundscape-y grungy noisiness + annoying members of the Royal Family.

Having just completed a wildly successful UK tour in support of rising stars Marmozets, as well previously bagging slots alongside Portishead and 65daysofstatic, Thought Forms’  mix of intense fuzziness, pedal-worshipping guitar histrionics and sparse, ethereal vocals is the sound of a band you didn’t know you needed to hear (unless you happen to be Prince Philip, as they found out…). We caught up with guitarist and co-vocalist Charlie Romijn to find out what drives their challenging sound.

“Whether I feel like writing something that sounds like Taylor Swift or Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah – that’s what comes out…we’ll find a way to make it work” – that’s how Press To MECO vocalist/guitarist Luke Caley. O-kaaay. Then again, given their extensive UK touring and the fact they bagged an opening slot on the Zippo Encore stage at last year’s Download Festival, it’s clear that PTM’s bizarre amalgam is resonating with plenty of the UK’s rock fans. We decided to get Caley on the phone to find out just what the hell they’re playing at.

Future Hits 177: EXES + first listen to Reptilian

EXES
From: London, UK
URLs: Facebook // Bandcamp

Our verdict: This is a rock band! Formed from the ashes of Tropics – a band we were quite partial to – they have become slightly odder in their melodies and there seem to be more melodies on what evidence we’ve heard so far, which we are very much down with. The great news is that there’s still a lot of rocking to be done by Exes and so they’ve let us put their new song, ‘Reptilian’ up on this site. That’s bloody good. Here’s a wee interview with Jodie Cox too. Read, listen, enjoy.

Future Hits 170: Shrine

Shrine 2014 promo photo Thrash Hits

Shrine
From: Brighton, UK
Lazy equation: Oceansize + Mastodon
URLs: Facebook // Twitter // Instagram

Thrash Hits verdict: As with pretty much all new bands, they formed from the ashes of a couple of bands from within the same local scene and Shrine did just that. With drummer, Liam Kearley and bassist, Andrew Gosden putting the band together with Joe Gosney, guitarist and today’s interview subject, they started putting music together. When Will Gardner’s band, Lithurgy parted ways, he added vocals. The result is a proggy, math riff-oriented mix of rock and metal that knows how long to linger on the melodies and when to descend into darker, sludgier ways. They’re releasing a new EP on 07 April 2014 but we’re streaming it below. Listen to it.

Falls
From: Flintshire, North Wales
Lazy equation: Pulled Apart By Horses x Baby Godzilla
URL: Website // Facebook // Twitter

Thrash Hits verdict: It’s easy to become disenchanted with the UK rock scene. There are one too many Britrock bore-offs peddling a dull as fuck brand of watching-paint-dry-core right now. Luckily we also have bands like Welsh loons Falls to provide an antidote. Dealing in the same breed of erratic rock as the likes of Pulled Apart By Horses, while packing in big choruses and causing Baby Godzilla levels of bedlam when they play live, they’re certainly more exciting than anything you’ll hear on the likes of Cavalier Youth.

Bad Band Photos 009: Generation Kill

August 22nd, 2013

New York City thrashers, Generation Kill featuring Rob Dukes of Exodus have just signed a worldwide record deal with the mighty metallers at Nuclear Blast, so they sent out a press release along with a photo of the band. So far, so normal…

Generation Kill
From: New York City, USA
Actually from: That annoying bit of Photoshopsville where you can’t quite colourmatch the faces
Age: Old. Too old for this shit, anyway
LOL factor: 4/6 – you won’t notice at first glance, but when you do…

Future Hits 153: Aeroplane Flies High

Aeroplane Flies High
From: Widnes, UK
Lazy equation: Grunge + Revival
URL: Facebook // Bandcamp // Twitter // Website

Thrash Hits verdict: With influences ranging all the way from stalwarts, Smashing Pumpkins and Alice In Chains to the female touch of Hole and Babes in Toyland to the noise rock of Metz and Part Chimp, it’s clear that Aeroplane Flies High enjoy music along the grunge spectrum. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. Having formed in 2009, the current line-up met at a Melvins gig and slowly but surely, they seem to be gathering pace. Translating their love for the American Big Fuzz guitar sound of the ’90s into big fat northwestern riffs and adding some smart lyrics, AFH could well be onto something.

Future Hits 147: Carnival Kids

Thrash Hits verdict: We always take note when a young Norwegian band plays with Gallows. Through this method we’ve found Wolves Like Us, Kvelertak and Blood Command from Norway way before we ought to have. Carnival Kids are another Norwegian band and they played with Gallows at the 100 Club earlier this year. It’s only reasonable that we spoke to guitarist, Jethro Fox about life as a Carnival Kid.
