The Thrash Hits Top 20 Albums of 2013

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

Like any artform, music is not a competition. There is only good and bad music and that categorisation in itself is all down to subjective taste. However, in a bid for scientific rigour; some quantitative analysis to fortify the qualitative spiels, we’ve asked all the Thrash Hits contributors to list their favourite albums of 2013. Yeah, it’s here to boost our egos by claiming what we say is best and it’ll surely get some good clicks and you may (rightly) point out that it’s just another list but, at the very least, you might see an album that you’ve never heard of and think about buying it. That would be cool.

There are bands that try to say fuck you to the world and there are bands that want to sound like bands that try to say fuck you to the world. Kvelertak couldn’t care less for either. They are their own category. They have three guitarists. One of them fingerpicks. They are their own prestigious circle of original thought and masterful creativity. You will never see inside this secret society because you are not worthy. Also because this is a band so humble and passionate in their approach to music, they are blissfully unaware that with their second album Meir, they have created a league of their own and have been saying “Fuck you” to the world since day one.

Album: Darkthrone – The Underground Resistance

In a funny way, you have to feel sorry for Darkthrone. Every time they’ve done something different, avoid what’s cool and flip humanity the finger, whatever they’ve done has, sooner or later, become trendy in metal circles. Unluckily for Darkthrone, ’80s speed metal and crust have both made a comeback. Everyone who spat their dummy out over The Cult Is Alive and F.O.A.D. incorporating both is now falling over themself to praise The Underground Resistance. So is this just hipster froth (well… some of it is, but is all of it?) or is album fifteen genuinely one of the Norwegians’ better moments? [Read more →]

The perpetual evolution of Enslaved has established themselves as arguably the most accomplished band still going from that Norwegian rush of the early 90s. The sonic foci have changed over time but the quality has been hugely consistent, with the last four albums have seen them depart their black metal routes even further, and also enjoy their best run of creativity in their history. So they’re not going to screw things up with album twelve, are they?

Given the seemingly everyday occurrence of yet another band reuniting, it’s perhaps a little surprising that you don’t hear too much clamour for an Emperor reunion. Despite their legendary status, near-perfect back catalogue and (by black metal standards, anyway) popularity, it’s not speculated about or demanded with regularity or vigour. Perhaps it’s because Ihsahn’s solo albums are so bum-clenchingly good, there’s no need for nostalgia – the present’s too good to get misty-eyed about bands past.

Album: Borknagar – Urd

by Tom Dare

If you read my pieces on the evolution of black metal here on Thrash Hits recently, you could be forgiven for missing the mention of Borknagar. They’ve been slightly overshadowed by some of their more celebrated compatriots – the price of being Norwegian is the instant mental comparisons to Emperor, Enslaved and the like, which is deeply unfair – and they’ve never quite got their dues. But with the black metal big guns rather quiet on the album front just now, does Urd represent their opportunity to finally be recognised for their considerable merits?

It is something of a tragedy that the guitarist in one of the most legendary of all black metal behemoths was forced to stop playing through medical necessity. While still an integral part of Immortal’s frozen gestalt, Demonaz hasn’t played guitar since 1997. It was inevitable that March Of The Norse, the first record from his new eponymous act, was going to be a matter of some interest.

What do you do when you’re one of the most consistently brilliant bands of your generation, and have managed to stay fresh, renewing your style successfully several times over the course of ten albums? Well, if you’re Enslaved you refresh yourself yet again on album number eleven and turn in one of the finest records of a glittering career.

Interview: Dimmu Borgir – “They might spit on us, but we don’t care!”

September 2nd, 2010

When Norwegian black metallers Dimmu Borgir came to town, we sent Tom Dare off to chat to guitarist Galder about new album, Abrahadabra

After three years and the departure of two band members (keyboard player Mustis, and bassist & clean vocalist ICS Vortex), Dimmu Borgir are about to release new album Abrahadabra. At a top-secret location in London (i.e., a Travelodge), we got to listen to this vast and ambitious slab of evil. After recovering, we sat down with Galder, guitarist with arguably the biggest Norwegian black metal band going, to discuss the band’s new record, Aleister Crowley, touring with Korn and potentially being spat on.
