So, “nu-thrash” is dead then? It seems so and not before time really – as a notorious grump and long-time thrasher myself, the majority of the latter-day neon-and-bandanas “party thrash” contingent got right on my norks. More of a pastiche that missed pretty much the entire point of the genre rather than a valid movement, it won’t be terribly missed around here. This won’t affect Huddersfield’s Evile much with them being cut from an altogether more authentic cloth, with Skull marking their fourth album in six years.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 012: Possibly the worst interview we’ve ever done with Evile

August 31st, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

We’ve interviewed British thrash heavyweights Evile loads over the last few years. We chatted to them in a seedy London whiskey bar just before Infected Nations came out. We’ve talked nonsense with them backstage at Sonisphere. We sat on a plush sofa and asked them questions about Five Serpent’s Teeth just before that record came out. However, none of these interviews is quite as cringeworthy as when Hugh drunkenly accosted Ol Drake and Ben Carter from the band backstage at this year’s Bloodstock Open Air. Oh, the things we do for our podcast….

Evile and playing a free charity gig next week. Go along and donate and thrash out and what have you.

Thoe UK leading thrash revivalists, Evile, are playing a charity show in London down at the Old Blue Last on Tuesday next week. It’s free entry, but since it’s a charity show, they’ll be taking donations on the door for the British Lung Foundation. That seems entirely reasonable to us – after all, what kind of prick goes to a free charity show and moans about making a donation on the door? That’s right, no-one, that’s who.

Live: Hammerfest IV – The Hammer of Thor – 16 March 2012

March 22nd, 2012

Anthrax at Hammerfest 2012 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

With (hopefully) a painful and debilitating hangover in tow, we forced David Keevill back out into the drinking pits of Hammerfest to report on Day 2 – the first full day of the festival. Little did we realise at the time that one of the band he would see would result in him getting “spermy pants”. Jeesh….

Evile’s rise to the top of the so-called “thrash revival” has been well charted by now, and you don’t need us to tell you about how Huddersfield’s finest have rapidly become a dearly loved figure within British metal. But thrash’s new wave has its detractors as well – we’ve all got plenty of Slayer and Exodus records by now, and accusations that some of the latest clutch of shredders haven’t necessarily done much that’s genuinely new or distinct have some merit, including some from right here. Have Evile finally managed to record an album to shut those dissenting voices up?

2008 into 2009: Evile

December 7th, 2008

Huddersfield thrashers, Evile have had a mad 2008 and so we caught up with master shredder, Ol Drake and singer/guitarist, Matt Drake to chat about touring with Megadave and getting a Subway sandwich endorsement.

What was your highlight of 2008?
M: Having a whisky with Dave Mustaine.
O: It’s a mixture of two. Touring Europe with Megadeth was a dream come true – great guys and great band – but also the tour with Exodus. We’ve had so much fun in 2008.

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
M: Having to drop off the Satyricon tour due to my brothers jaw trying to have sex with a concrete floor.
O: In Rotterdam, I collapsed and fractured my jaw and split my chin open, forcing us to cancel the Satyricon tour. SHIT. You win again, Gravity. For the band, it was missing Hellfest. We were so unbelievably gutted we couldn’t make it due to problems at the ferry port. We seriously hope they’ll have us back to make up for it.
