Back in 2003, Kerrang! magazine published a list of the most influential albums ever, with Faith No More’s Angel Dust sitting at the top of the pile. Ten years later and that 1992 album is still proving an inspiration to many – Mike Patton’s most famous project has left an indelible mark on the landscape of alternative music, and the vein of influence courses through this second album from South East Londoners, Antlered Man.

That Fucking Tank are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, and the Leeds-based duo have decided to chronicle their decade of particularly clangorous brand of instrumental noise/math-rock with a “best-of” of sorts, which is a somewhat ironic move on their part. With a name as vehemently antithetical to the mainstream as That Fucking Tank, what’s more mainstream than a “Greatest Hits” record?

When the term “stadium rock” is applied to something, it’s predominately in a pejorative sense. It’s a euphemism for blandness, palatability, fit for mass consumption. But stadium rock isn’t always M.O.R. triviality; Brand New headlined Wembley Arena in 2010, and sounded right at home in such a setting. The instant intimacy of the headliners filled the vast venue that night, and proved emotive post-hardcore could still bare its soul in such a characterless environment. With Brand New currently AWOL, a successor is required to take back “stadium rock” from synonymity with banality, and Balance And Composure may just be that band.

Back in 2004, Saosin were on the brink of emergence into the big leagues, until vocalist Anthony Green upped sticks in the middle of the Warped Tour. He went on to form Circa Survive, who are still going strong four albums down the line whilst Saosin…flounder. MINE don’t sound even a little like Saosin or Circa Survive, but there is a certain parallel to be drawn.

Album: Black Spiders – This Savage Land

PledgeMusic, where bands source funds for recording through their fanbase by offering special goodies for their support, brings up an interesting quandary – when your audience have put their hard-earned into your product, where does a band draw the line between making a record they’re pleased with, and one that pleases the fans? Black Spiders aren’t expected to stray too far from a fairly narrow spectrum as classic rock revivalists, but on this second full-length, the band have brought some different elements into their high-octane rawk an’ rawl that may surprise their fanbase.

For a young band, having lofty ambitions is no bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. Having creative vision of huge scope gives you a tangible goal to achieve; however, as so often is the case, ardor can run rampant and focus can be lost. This, unfortunately, is the fate that befalls Now, Voyager’s second EP Tell-Tale Hearts – a four-tracker that reveals a band with ample ability, but crucially, lacking in cohesive direction.

On Defeater’s third full-length Letters Home, their conceptual story arc about an exceptionally dysfunctional wartime family continues. Previous albums have told the story of a brother each, and this record imparts tales of the violent patriarch’s earlier life. However, the band have clearly not learned from George Lucas’ mistakes, as adding preceding events to canon does not make for particularly riveting storytelling.

Intense. Harrowing. Bleak. Just some of the terms that could be used to describe La Mort Du Soleil, the third full-length by Québecoise atmospheric black metal act Sombres Forêts. It’s not just shards of harsh guitar and abrasive howls of shrieked vocal that engulf the ears of the listener here; we are also privy to soulful, gentle piano and wistful, dreamy acoustic guitars, that aid this record in breaking down the parameters between grim, savage black metal and the rich textures and dynamic atmospherics of post-rock.

Named after the Hollywood star of the same name, the title Drug Church have chosen for their debut full-length proves to be an extremely apt one, as, like Walker’s most famous film role, this is fast and indeed, furious. The Albany, NY quintet, who feature Patrick Kindlon of Self Defense Family (formerly known as End of a Year), will strike a chord with those who still hold a torch for 90s grunged-up post-hardcore.

It’s fair to say that, from its inception, this project has been recieved to the widespread spaffing of pants. You’ve got two major and winning components here – three former members of post-metal demi-gods Isis providing the instrumental backdrop to the unmistakable vocal of Deftones‘ Chino Moreno; a match made in heaven.
