Midweek Bootleg 004: Raging Speedhorn – Thumper (demo version)

November 8th, 2012

When it comes to unlikely “success” stories of British metal, you’d be hard-pressed to find one less likely or as “successful” as Raging Speedhorn. We cracked out their demo CD, and let Hugh Platt get on with the business of being nostalgic.

Raging Speedhorn 2000 Thrash Hits

If you’ve listened to this week’s episode of the Thrash Hits Podcast (and why wouldn’t you have?), you’ll have heard Raz and I reminiscing about Raging Speedhorn, after the surprise (well, to us at least) appearance of former Raging Speedhorn vocalist, John Loughlin, in the live line-up for Extreme Noise Terror at this year’s Damnation Festival.

Live: Steel Panther @ London Old Blue Last – Friday, 17 September 10

September 23rd, 2010

When Steel Panther play a last-minute gig to a tiny room of people, there’s not a chance in hell we’d miss it. Amit Sharma was down the front at the Old Blue Last watching (hopefully not underage) girls get frisky to some butt metal.

It’s crazy to think that it was just 15 months ago when Steel Panther exploded in the UK with that legendary performance packing out the Tuborg tent at Download Festival 2009. Since then they have managed to pop over on a quarterly basis and develop enough of a following to become a Brixton Academy-sized band. Not bad for just over a year’s work.

big four metallica megadeth anthrax slayer thrash hits sonisphere 2010

Yeah, that’s one of the most metal photos ever, right? Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax may well be doing the rounds on the Continent (Poland done, Switzerland next, then Czech Republic probably reviewed RIGHT HERE ON THRASH HITS!!) but if you can’t be arsed flying Ryanair to a miserable European field, you can just watch them in the cinema. Seriously. #SRSLY?

2008 into 2009: Unearth

December 11th, 2008

The mighty Derek Kerswill, drummer of the equally mighty Unearth seems to have had a fantastic year of playing lots of music and is looking forward to even more of the same. Read exactly what he has to say about 2008.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Definitely releasing the new Unearth record, The March. Playing Russia and Wacken Fest with Iron Maiden was pretty bitchin! Ozzfest with Kingdom of Sorrow was amazing too! Been a great year for me.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Honestly, I’m thinking that doing dead lifts, backstage before a show in Danville, Virginia and pulling my back out four days before the end of tour was the worst thing that happened. It was four of the longest days of my life, but I pushed through the shows and made it happen.

Ozzfest to have all-star Dimebag Darrell tribute

July 25th, 2008

Dimebag Darrell Ozzfest Thrash Hits

Ozzfest 2008 has released details of this year’s event, which will include a special, all-star tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott and will take place in Dimebag’s home state of Texas on 9 August 2008.

The All-Star Dimebag Tribute will go onstage directly after Dimebag’s brother and former bandmate, Vinnie Paul’s latest band, Hellyeah perform. The collective will play a variety of Pantera songs.

The group will include stars such as Slayer’s Kerry King, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez, Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Charlie Benate, Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta, King Diamond and former Damageplan bassist Bob Zilla.

Metal Hammer has reported that Dimebag’s partnet Rita Haney said: “To have the name ‘Dimebag’ still, to this day, unite musicians to pay homage in such a respectful way, is very overwhelming. In Dime’s vision, it’s always been about a damn good time.”

While Gigwise reported on Sharon Osbourne saying: “When we decided on Dallas as the site for this year’s Ozzfest, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell since it was his hometown.”

It does look bloody good, doesn’t it.

Ozzfest will take place on 9 August 2008 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas
