Nu Metalcore is definitely happening. Why?

September 19th, 2013

There’s a new (nu?) trend afoot in the world of emerging metalcore bands and that trend is similar in its makeup to nu metal when it came out. Instead of chug heavy riffs, we start with metalcore and instead of rap, we have RnB. Gavin Lloyd grew up with nu metal. Is this new trend as worthy or original, though? Hmmm…

I grew up during nu metal’s heyday and the likes of Limp Bizkit and Slipknot went a long way towards shaping my taste in music and making me the metal-loving scamp I am today. Nu metal was huge and had a mainstream crossover appeal that hasn’t been seen since in terms of heavy music.

Papa Roach no longer have any pretence about being a metal band. Everyone may have heard of them first time out through the nu metal angst of ‘Last Resort‘, but they’re nothing to do with that anymore – and haven’t been for bloody ages. Eighth album The Connection (yes, Papa Roach have been around long enough to make eight albums – how old do you feel now?) is overtly radio-friendly rock for mainstream consumption.

Interview: Benji Webbe of Skindred talks about Union Black, Papa Roach and his dreadlocks

April 20th, 2011

Welsh ragga punks, Skindred are releasing their fourth album, Union Black on 25 April 2011. We thought it would be a good idea to ask frontman, Benji Webbe a bunch of questions about the album. It’s a good idea!

Expectations are very high for the new Union Black record. What were the main differences when writing and recording this album?
It was killer to record our fourth record in the UK, with British producer James “Le Rock” Loughrey. All our other albums have been recorded in the States with an American dude producing, so it’s different working over here in the snow and cold rather than the sun of LA and Florida. It’s UK all the way this time baby.

2008 into 2009: Evile

Huddersfield thrashers, Evile have had a mad 2008 and so we caught up with master shredder, Ol Drake and singer/guitarist, Matt Drake to chat about touring with Megadave and getting a Subway sandwich endorsement.

What was your highlight of 2008?
M: Having a whisky with Dave Mustaine.
O: It’s a mixture of two. Touring Europe with Megadeth was a dream come true – great guys and great band – but also the tour with Exodus. We’ve had so much fun in 2008.

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
M: Having to drop off the Satyricon tour due to my brothers jaw trying to have sex with a concrete floor.
O: In Rotterdam, I collapsed and fractured my jaw and split my chin open, forcing us to cancel the Satyricon tour. SHIT. You win again, Gravity. For the band, it was missing Hellfest. We were so unbelievably gutted we couldn’t make it due to problems at the ferry port. We seriously hope they’ll have us back to make up for it.
