PledgeMusic, where bands source funds for recording through their fanbase by offering special goodies for their support, brings up an interesting quandary – when your audience have put their hard-earned into your product, where does a band draw the line between making a record they’re pleased with, and one that pleases the fans? Black Spiders aren’t expected to stray too far from a fairly narrow spectrum as classic rock revivalists, but on this second full-length, the band have brought some different elements into their high-octane rawk an’ rawl that may surprise their fanbase.

EP: Hawk Eyes – That’s What This Is

Another EP, yet another way for Hawk Eyes to prove that the biggest melodic hooks don’t necessarily come in the most obvious packages. Over their last few releases, the Leeds four-piece have moved away from brontosaurus-sized riffs and into much more alternative dizzying territories; the band have learned how to fit pathologically insane licks into even the most disjointed of passages, with a healthy dose of brazen cheek thrown in for good measure.

Album: Earthtone9 – IV

Earthtone9
IV
Self-released
8 April 2013

by Rob McAuslan

Ask a random selection of UK metal fans aged mid-20s and up which band they thought should have been massive at the turn of the century, and there’s a fair chance that Earthtone9 will be the answer you get. The Nottingham six-piece had a blend of accessible melody, progressive tendencies and sheet-metal fury that was rare at the time, and still proves hard to find now. Splitting in 2002, the band announced in 2010 that they’d be reforming to play a few shows…and then we even got a new EP a few months later…and now 11 years almost to the day since the release of their last EP, (finally!) a new Earthtone9 album has arrived.

The Defiled want you to watch them record a live album (if you’ll bung them some cash via PledgeMusic)

The Defiled new promo photo 2012 Thrash Hits

We’ve been banging on about how good The Defiled are since before Thrash Hits even existed (as the poor, unfortunate souls we drink with and have to listen to our band-espousing can attest). We wish they’d hurry up and start work on the follow-up to their killer debut long-player, Grave Times, but right now they’re keeping themselves busy with a load of other projects – including the recording of a new live album. A new live album that they want you to help them with.

Album: Hawk Eyes – Ideas

Hawk Eyes
Ideas
Fierce Panda
26 March 2012

by David Keevill

Re-christened from the ashes of Chickenhawk, Hawk Eyes‘ full-length “debut”, Ideas, sees the band recommence a vigorous assault on complacency in music by making one of the most dangerous and interesting rock records of recent years. Not content with just being part of a demented touring schedule last year and releasing the five-punch EP of Mindhammers in December, Hawk Eyes have persisted in loosing the record equivalent of a full fucking cranial episiotomy.

Interview: Hawk Eyes on name-changing, denim jackets, and how their new album isn’t at all like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Hands up anyone out there who until now didn’t know that Hawk Eyes is the name that Chickenhawk now operate under? Well, if you’ve got your hand up, you’re a massive idiot – they changed their name back in March 2011, and you’ve had plenty of time to get used to it by now. Hawk Eyes bloody well haven’t taken their foot off since then though, as since that aforementioned name-change, they’ve toured all over the bloody place, found time to record a new album (by the name of Ideas, with a March 26 release date), and then blown even their own expectations out of the water when their PledgeMusic pre-orders for the new record practically obliterating their target in less than a week.

With all that in mind, we caught up with their guitarist, Rob Stephens, and their drummer, Matt Reid, to find out how 2012 is treating them so far.
