Relapse are on a bit of a tear of late, signing all manner of bands both old and new; from death metal legends like Obituary to North Carolina’s grind neophytes Columns, they’ve got new records in the works from most areas of extreme metal. It’s at least encouraging to see this kind of faith being shown in a time when the industry as a whole is apparently eating beans on toast five nights out of seven. Scooping up Mortals as a part of this recent drive may well be one of the smarter moves they’ve made.

by Pete Long

We live in an era of post-[suffix] genres. Tombs, the Brooklyn four-piece that made a name for themselves with 2011’s Path of Totality, might be loosely described as post-everything. In a fit of what might be described as either extreme ambition or common sense, they’ve taken a huge array of influences and welded them together. If their new album, Savage Gold, can’t convert people to Tombs’ way of thinking, then absolutely nothing will.

There are lots of aspects of metal that you can play to your mother, whilst still hoping to earn her approval and certify that you’re a functioning member of society. Some music, however, is so unrepentant, so clearly a mark of projected sociopathy, that it can only just sidle onto the extremer end of Radio 1 Rock Show, let alone be played to a beloved, concerned family member without wishing to cause serious alarm.

It’s as inescapable now as it ever was: the lazy, tedious comparison of gore-metal legends Exhumed to Carcass. Stop it. All of you. Yes, there’s a new Carcass record inbound – I understand and even share your excitement, I totally do – but Exhumed in 2013 are as similar to the Liverpudlian grinders as they ever truly were, which is to say not actually very much at all. Let’s talk about this record on its own terms for a second, shall we?

Whilst the majority of bands fanny about deciding exactly which sub-sub-sub-subgenre of metal they’d like to fit exactly into, Dave Davidson and his crew in Revocation just get on with the business of writing excellent heavy metal. Also, it’s a widely-known fact that banjos on metal records rule.

I so badly wanted to be excited by this. Devourment are legends in the slam scene – their last record, Unleash The Carnivore, was a spine-snapping, gory delight – and this new one is produced by Erik Rutan. Surely Conceived In Sewage couldn’t be anything other than excellent? Well…it hasn’t exactly failed entirely, and there are some great bits on it, but overall it’s lacking…something.

Sunday Slaylist: RIP Pat Egan from Relapse Records

February 24th, 2013

Patlapse Thrash Hits

This week we’re turning over the Sunday Slaylist to something a little different – we want you to go buy something. On Monday 18 February, Pat Egan, Relapses Records’ Director of Retail Sales, died following a the result of complications with a case of pneumonia. To raise money for Pat’s daughter’s college fund, the folks over at Relapse have gone and put together a compilation of 20 of the finest bands ever to have worked with the label – and we think it’d be a damn fine gesture if a few of our readers joined us in buying it, in recognition of the awesome music Pat helped bring us over the years, as well as to help out the family of a fellow metal fan when they need it most.

FREE STUFF: Relapse Records have posted loads of their back catalogue up for online streaming

May 30th, 2012

Relapse Records logo Thrash Hits

Relapse Records have gone and posted an enormous chunk of their back catalogue online via their official Bandcamp page, where you can stream the whole damn lot FOR FREE. Now despite some reporting to the contrary, it’s not their entire back catalogue (or at least, it isn’t yet), but it is a fair old part of it. Even so, it still means that you can listen to over 100 releases by Relapse, including records by Death, Pig Destroyer, Rotten Sound, Red Fang, Toxic Holocaust, and a whole lot more besides. The only real omissions from Relapse’s Bandcamp profile are some of the bands that used to be signed to the label but aren’t anymore – for those acts, which include Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan among their number – Relapse have posted single sample songs from the albums in question. We don’t know why you’d moan about this though – it’s still more free and legal music for you to stream.

Obviously Relapse are hoping you’ll reward them for their online generosity by shelling out for a release or two – such as Baroness’ forthcoming Yellow & Green album – and why wouldn’t you? Remember kids, whether you’re a renegade who’d torrent his own grandmother given the chance, or if you’re the kind of person who’ll only listen to vinyl that you preferably bought in an actual real-world record store, it’s important that you support the bands you love. Because if you don’t, they might not be able to afford to keep making that music you enjoy so much.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to order some Brutal Truth albums at Relapse’s online store.

Album: Coalesce – Give Them Rope (deluxe reissue)

There was always a capriciousness to Coalesce which made them a difficult band to follow. No stranger to line-up changes or hiatuses, the band nevertheless have a powerful reputation amongst hardcore fans as group who, along with the likes of Botch, paved the way for the sort of abrasive aggression and grinding time-signature complexity which has since been honed and shined by the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan.
