You may know about our love/obsession with most things Icelandic so it may not be a surprise to see a new band from Reykjavik featured here. This is MUCK, they play intelligent, discordant hardcore and it’s fantastic.

This week, Raz and Hugh discuss their respective recent festival activites at Iceland Airwaves and Damnation Festival in Leeds, break down the latest clutch of bands announced for Download Festival 2012 (except A Day To Remember, who got announced on Scuzz just after the first run of new band announcements), and look back on the life of Mitch Lucker from Suicide Silence following his death last week.

Thrash Hits Verdict:
We can think of no better way than Muck of celebrating our centenary of celebrating new bands. This is the kind of band that you just hope you’ll stumble across in a grotty biker bar in a weird country. We saw these guys last week in a grotty biker bar at Iceland Airwaves 2011 in their hometown of Reykjavik and they blew our frozen cotton socks off. This band has everything: the songs, the attitude, the desire. Every time we reflected upon them doing something awesome (like playing slide guitar with a Macbook) they did something even more awesome (like play ‘Mother’). This band needs to be heard by everybody.

Iceland Airwaves is traditionally a very cool festival with very cool bands. Iceland’s got loads of awesome metal bands though, and they’re more often the ones that tour overseas. That’s what WE care about. Luckily, Saturday had a whole day of it in a biker bar called Amsterdam. And yes, there’s an Iceland Chapter of the Hell’s Angels.

It’s the morning of Day 03 so it’s time to try and remember all the terrible things that went on yesterday in our non-waterproof trainers. If there was ever a country you want to be wearing shoes that don’t leak, it’s Iceland. Damn our soggy feet and all the awesome parties they made puddles in.
Also, we got a ride into town with Endless Dark and they played us some new songs. We had a mini #carm0sh.

Oh, Reykjavik, how we’ve missed you. The rain, the wind, the fizzy, fizzy lager and the inevitable hangover. Obviously we trivialise our awful, globe-trotting, rock-watching lives by focusing on the things people moan about on Twitter every day but Iceland Airwaves 2011 is here. We are there and we’ve already seen some bands and drunk beers. Lots of expensive beers.

The second ROCK The Embassy clubnight is hitting Mayfair on 02 March 2011 and will feature the mighty Malefice – who we saw in Camden a few weeks ago – as well as Icelandic stoner rockers, Cliff Clavin – who we saw in Reykjavik in 2009 and in 2010 – as well as the delectable delights of Lora Leigh’s live show. You might as well win a pair of tickets, right?

You might remember that we went over to Reykjavik in October for Iceland Airwaves Festival 2010. We saw a band called Reykjavik!. They’re distinct from the name of the country’s capital because they put an exclamation mark on the end. Anyway, they wrote a song called ‘Internet’ and made a video about it in a bar that Damon Albarn from Blur spent so much money in once, they let him own a bit of it.

The best thing for you to know is that we stopped looking at our watch at 5am but definitely went to sleep at some point between then and when we woke up at 9am. Four Rennies and a bag of croissants later and it’s definitely time to discuss the disgustingly metal evening of metal we had last night.
