There’s a fine art to writing great rock music. Let’s be honest, there are an awful lot of bands getting it wrong. Sometimes it can almost get too much and the urge to run off and go live in a cave, while taking up a radical new lifestyle, such as listening to Nicki Minaj on repeat, becomes ever more tempting. However every now and then something like this comes along to restore our faith.

Photos: Killswitch Engage + Trivium @ Manchester O2 Academy – 01 February 2014

Killswitch Engage live in 2014 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

Dual-headliner tours are always a weird one. No matter what fancy-pants arrangements the bands come to, no matter if they have a stricty-enforced on-off switch for who plays last every night, naturally one band rises above the other. And so it goes with Killswitch Engage and Trivium, who are currently enacting this age-old conflict at venues up and down the length of the UK. Our snapper in the North, Gary Wolstenholme, was on hand in Manchester to shoot both bands when they brought that unspoken conflict to the O2 Academy.

Of the big four metal bands of the modern era (Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Five Finger Death Punch, and Trivium) it is Trivium who are the most worthy. They don’t have the cheesy emptiness of the Welshmen, they’ve stopped ripping off Metallica quite as blatantly as Avenged Sevenfold are doing now and they’re not political knuckle-draggers like Five Finger Death Punch.

Basically, as fashionable as it is to suggest that none of them are metal enough to be spoken of in the same breath as the likes of Metallica and Pantera, Trivium, by simply being a bunch of metallers playing metal for metallers, have got the least to dislike about them. By a long way.

Album: Dream Theater – Dream Theater

A Dramatic Turn of Events was only superficially spectacular. It sounded like a Dream Theater album, but little else. It felt like they were going through the motions somewhat and as they were adapting to a new drummer in Mike Mangini, having written the bulk of his drum lines before he joined, it wasn’t surprising that a little of the dynamism that comes from the ease of familiarity was lost.

Interview: Blood Command’s Silje Tombre and Yngve Andersen in London

Norwegian hardcore quintet, Blood Command are most of the way through their second UK tour. With two albums and a handful of EPs, they’ve flown under the radar until now, but there’s a feeling that that’s about to change.

After playing a superb one-off show at the Old Blue Last in December 2012 (“Our manager told us to. We wanted to build up our English fanbase.” – Andersen), they’re back six months later for this tour and an appearance at Download Festival. It’s not been the easiest road to here, but it’s been a necessary one and now is the right time.

Interview: Kvelertak on their new album, Meir

Ahead of the release of their second album, Meir, Norwegian blackened party punk rock ‘n’ rollers, Kvelertak had a day of hanging about in London talking to relative strangers about that album. We were among that press gang and asked singer, Erlend Hjelvik and guitarist, Vidar Landa all about Roadrunner Records, lyrics and being Norwegian.

There are bands that try to say fuck you to the world and there are bands that want to sound like bands that try to say fuck you to the world. Kvelertak couldn’t care less for either. They are their own category. They have three guitarists. One of them fingerpicks. They are their own prestigious circle of original thought and masterful creativity. You will never see inside this secret society because you are not worthy. Also because this is a band so humble and passionate in their approach to music, they are blissfully unaware that with their second album Meir, they have created a league of their own and have been saying “Fuck you” to the world since day one.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 015: What’s in a label?

September 28th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

This week, Raz and Hugh tackle the somewhat-thorny subject of the role record labels have to play in the modern metal scene. From Warner Bros. Roadrunner Records cull, to Hydra Head’s decision to close, through to Century Media’s digital litigationathon and the power of modern micro-labels, we’ve gone at it from all angles. We also throw out some brief reaction to the news of Slipknot being booked as the third and final headliner for Download Festival 2013.

POLL: Hang on a minute – is Down IV Part I – The Purple EP a load of old balls?

September 18th, 2012

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard the new EP from Down. Guess what? Hugh Platt was less than impressed.

Down 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

Back in January, I wrote a speculative bit of fluff about Down putting out an EP in 2012, rather than the fully fledged album that their fans have been clamouring for since 2007’s Down III – Over The Under. I glibly suggested that Down putting out an EP meant that we’d be getting just the cream of the New Orleans-based supergroup’s capabilities, rather than them just churning out a longer record that would no doubt contain a couple of songs that would only sound good if you’d smoked as much weed as Phil Anselmo.

Except it hasn’t turned out like that, has it?

VIDEO: Machine Head get NSFW-level gruesome for ‘Darkness Within’

July 31st, 2012

Machine Head 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

Remember when we poked fun at Machine Head for having cheap-looking videos? Yeah, we pretty much found something to laugh at from every era in their history. Well, their latest video for ‘Darkness Within’ pretty much put paid to that – we’d like to think it was the cosmic impact of our bitter, bitter blogging that spurred them to break the cycle of naffness, but let’s face it – it probably wasn’t.

In fact, this video is pretty damn swish – we’d go so far as to say it has the highest production values of any MH video to date. It’s also very much NOT SAFE FOR WORK, so unless you work in the kind of place where violence, self mutilation, worm-eating, mutation, blood-letting and the like are all par the course, don’t go watching this until you’re out of the office.
