Criticising bands for not releasing any decent albums in 20 years was cool ten years ago, but these days some metal fans accept that pioneers and left-over bands from certain scenes are just “classic”. The shift to reliance on live revenue suits bands like Slayer and Deicide just fine. Why innovate when your fans demand the early 80s and 90s?

The slightly clumsy play on words in the title aside, there are few missteps in this second album to spring following the rebirth of NWOBHM legends Hell. Resurrecting a long-lost band is potentially fraught with issues around quality, but their last release laid those sort of fears to rest quite handily and lead to some truly excellent live shows over the last couple of years.

Sunday Slaylist: Live Evil Festival 2013

September 29th, 2013

Live Evil 2013 Thrash Hits

In keeping with our ongoing theme of Winter metal-fest themed Sunday Slaylists, we were going to put something together today to herald the impending (and quite frankly magnificent-looking) Live Evil Festival 2013. We say “were”, because yesterday while bumming around on the internet, we found out that Dylan Hughes aka A Fist In The Face Of God got there first. And made a better mix than we ever could.

Interview: Nathan Opposition from Ancient VVisdom on A Deathlike Inferno, Aleister Crowley, and mankind’s obsession with apocalyptic prophecies

May 29th, 2012

Prior to their recent show at the OBL in London, Nathan Opposition from Ancient VVisdom took time out of his machete-sharpening schedule to trade a few words with Hugh Platt.

Nathan Opposition is a quietly-spoken man. Given that Nathan is an intimidating hulk of man, who gives off the kind of innate, physical menace that you only get from people who got neck tattoos back before the time they were a mark of a hipster fashionista, it puts us weirdly off-balance as we chat to the Ancient VVisdom frontman in a dressing room above the Old Blue Last. Still, it doesn’t stop us from grilling the chain-rattling, machete-waving vocalist on the subject of the band’s forthcoming new album – currently going under the working title of A Deathlike Inferno – as well as the finer points of Thelemic mysticism and philosophical Satanism. Y’know, low-brow pithy topics like that.

Deicide added to Bloodstock Open Air 2012 as a UK festival exclusive

January 10th, 2012

It’s as the title says – everyone’s favourite forehead-branding no-longer-quite-as-Satanic-as-they-used-to-be death metallers, Deicide, have been added to the bill of Bloodstock Open Air 2012, where they will play their only UK show of 2012. And there was us thinking this was the year V Festival would see the light and sandwich Glen Benton and co. in between Jessie J and Skrillex.

Sunday Spotify Slaylist: Easter Special

April 4th, 2010

It’s Easter – if you’ve got any sense you’re in a chocolate-coma right now. Unless you’ve like our man Tom Dare, in which case you’re emailing us Satanic heavy metal Slaylists of the most blasphemous kind imaginable.

Heavy Metal doesn’t really “do” Easter that well. Oh, we’re sure there’s probably some Christian Metal Bands out there singing about the Last Supper and the Resurrection and all that, but Christian Metal is basically 99% bollocks, and we sure as shit weren’t going to make a Slaylist full of that.

But what Metal does do well is is blasphemy, satanism, paganism, atheism and stuff that in some way promotes something that the Pope would strongly disapprove of. Much in the way the rest of the right-thinking world disapproves of covering-up institutionalised paedophilia. OhYesWeJustWentThere.

Album: Goatwhore – Carving Out The Eyes Of God

by Tom Gibbons

Like a squaddie returning home to his doting girlfriend after a lengthy service in the Helmand Province, Carving Out The Eyes Of God ditches the foreplay and goes right in for the kill. Systematically producing a new album’s worth of ferocious Black/Death metal every 3 years has done nothing to blunt Goatwhore‘s ardour for fucked up noise.
