VIKING METAL WITH BIG BEARDS. That’s why you’re here, right? To see lots of photos of Johan Hegg and the lads from Amon Amarth headbang to their top-notch brand of sub-genre metal. Yes? Our man Mike Burnell was on hand to get lots of photos of just that when the band’s recent UK tour landed in Brighton.

It’s time for another Thrash Hits festival splash page – and this time it’s for Hammerfest. All of our Hammerfest 2013 coverage from the weekend will be linked to on this here post, so make sure you bookmark it as it’s all you’re going to need. Yep. That means individual band coverage (photos, setlists and maybe even some reviews), all the dodgy rumours and awful gossip our man David Keevill overhears, and every single photo of Wales-based debauchery that Gary Wolstenholme and Jenn McCambridge snap will be here.

Day 1 of Hammerfest is traditionally the “quietest” day (i.e., the night with the fewest bands). That didn’t stop our man David Keevill from getting stuck in though….
6 things we learned on Day 1 of Hammerfest V:

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here. All our work from Bloodstock Open 2012 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Interviews, photos, setlists, rumours, and who knows? – maybe even some tiny reviews – it’s all here. [Read more →]

Raz is once again absent (his jetsetter lifestyle means he’s off in Berlin to catch Pearl Jam), so this week Hugh is once again joined by Tom Dare, and this week by another Tom from the Thrash Hits writers roster – Tom Doyle. Yes, he’s the Tom Doyle that Lower In Atlantis threatened at headbutt that time. No, he’s not the Tom Doyle who’s a member of Don Broco.
This week’s topics of conversation include recent gigs by Evile, Decapitated and *shels, but mostly we just talk about the Randy Blythe/manslaughter situation that has gotten most of the metal internet up in arms one way or the other over the last 7 days.
We still want your feedback on this one, so please take a moment to send us your thoughts via email, by posting a comment down below, or by bellowing at us over Facebook or Twitter. And for Satan’s sake, go and subscribe to our podcast over on iTunes.

Earlier this week, Evile and Savage Messiah teamed up and took over the Old Blue Last for a charity show in aid of the British Lung Foundation. We sent Hugh Platt to squeeze in at the back and witness one of the most hectic shows he’s ever seen at the OBL.
Six things we learned when we saw Evile at the OBL:
Evile and playing a free charity gig next week. Go along and donate and thrash out and what have you.

Thoe UK leading thrash revivalists, Evile, are playing a charity show in London down at the Old Blue Last on Tuesday next week. It’s free entry, but since it’s a charity show, they’ll be taking donations on the door for the British Lung Foundation. That seems entirely reasonable to us – after all, what kind of prick goes to a free charity show and moans about making a donation on the door? That’s right, no-one, that’s who.

This time next week, our intrepid representatives at Hammerfest IV – The Hammer of Thor, will be slowly trying to recover from a weekend where the level of attention paid to the many heavy metal bands playing is directly (and inversely) proportional to the levels of booze being imbibed by them. How do we know they’ll be getting smashed rather than getting their mosh on? Well, because even if you headline your event with Anthrax and Skindred, we know for a fact that whenever more than one Thrash Hits contributor ends up in the same room at Pontin’s in Prestatyn, someone ends up puking. That’s not us trying to sound like a bunch of lads-on-tour kerrrrayyyzzzyy drunks either – that’s the raw statistics of Hammerfest talking.
In any case, we figured we’d put together a Hammerfest-themed Spotify Slaylist to start getting them in the mood nice and early.
