Earlier this year, Deafheaven released their second album, Sunbather. It received top marks on this site – something not many albums get. This gig in a basement in Dalston is the first time they’ve played in the capital since its release. Thrash Hits were there in force.

Pre-gig meal: Psychic Burger at the venue. Of course we’ll eat a hipster burger before we watch a hipster metal band in east London. It’s delicious and recommended. Hipsters know what they’re doing. Sierra Nevada in the fridges as well. Well done, Birthdays.

6 things we learnt watching Deafheaven in Dalston…

It’s been a while coming, but this is the end product of the heavy riffing that Johnny Truant guitarist, Stuart Hunter was chugging out during the death throes of the Brighton metallers’ demise. It’s a three-pronged attack that post-hardcore, sludge metal and shoegaze. Anacondas is a wonderfully chaotic beast.

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being made fun of? That unease where some obnoxious prick knows something that you don’t and you don’t really know what to do because you’re not sure. They’re being too subtle, but you know it’s not quite right – it’s too unfamiliar. You don’t know quite how to fight back because you know that if you say the wrong thing, they’ll just laugh at you.

Those obnoxious pricks are Deafheaven. Their weapon of torment is Sunbather. It’s bloody great.

Happy (belated) birthday, Finelines by My Vitriol

March 6th, 2012

Yeah, so this is a day late but I was either stuck on the London Underground or I was walking home for most of the day because someone left a bag unattended on the Tube. Attend to your bags, please.

Eleven years ago, a cool band called My Vitriol released their debut (and only) album, Finelines. Before I embarked upon my day-long waste of time, I noticed that it was 05 March 2012 whilst talking about Hundred Reasons on Twitter – another band from the same era.

Iceland. Famous for collapsing banks, one of the hardest languages to learn in the world, volcanoes, glaciers and one-time Chelsea striker Eidur Guðjohnsen. What it’s less famous for is heavy metal. Perhaps that’s for the best. If more people knew about the power of Sólstafir, the fuss kicked up by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull would seem like a minor affair, and Svartir Sandar is a shining example.
