With a tracklisting practically reading as a Best Of…, spanning all the way from 2000’s The Art of Self Defence through to last year’s De Vermis Mysteriis, High On Fire’s latest double-live album Spitting Fire Live serves both as a no-brainer purchase for fans, as well as a great (and way overdue) introduction for newcomers to the Oakland trio. Tracked over a pair of shows in December 2012, the Spitting Fire Live Vol 1 & 2  recordings were passed on to Greg Wilkinson and Converge’s Kurt Ballou for mixing, and offer a raw, no-frills playback of High On Fire’s stage performance.

Future Hits 123: Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister

Nately's Whore's Kid Sister promo photo Thrash Hits

Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister
From: Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.
Lazy equation: Narrows (at their noisiest) + Mike Patton (at his most stand-offish) x a disappointed howl at everything, ever.
URL: Facebook // Soundcloud // Bandcamp

Thrash Hits verdict: We first heard Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister back at the end of November, when they emailed us about their debut EP, Ribs. And like the idiots we are, we didn’t really listen to it until we were hungover as Hell on New Year’s Day. That was probably the wrong time for us to listen to their simultaneously eerie, oppressive, and altogether uncomfortable mindslap of sounf for the first time. Even so, we’re still glad we didn’t go and watch this video they made for ‘I Will Never Feel This Love’ as our introduction to the band. Bloody hell, that would’ve ended us. Anyway, we finally got round to sending them an email the other week, and they sent us back some short, sharp responses.

Kerry King of Slayer at ATP I'll Be Your Mirro c/o Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

There can’t be many albums that get metal fans’ collective excitement up as much as Slayer’s Reign In Blood does, which is why it seemed like everyone with even the slightest metal tinge to their record collection in the South of England decamped to North London last week to catch Slayer perform arguably their best (and certainly most important) album in full at All Tomorrow’s Parties’ I’ll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace. Gary Wolstenholme doesn’t even live in the South, but he still made the trek down from his native Sheffield to take photos of it for us.

Nirvana tshirt old people thrash hits

You can see from the picture that the mega-selling Seattle grungers appeal to OAPs, but Nirvana are also loved by infants as well. Check out this kid’s parents waking him up with ‘Breed’. His reaction is… impressive.

Future Hits 113: Conan

Conan

From: Liverpool, UK
Lazy equation: (Sleep + Batillus) x as many MATAMP amps as you can get your hands on.
URL: Website //  Facebook

Thrash Hits Verdict: We first became aware of Conan last year, when one of our photographers, Matt Thomas, started singing their praises at us. Well, when say “singing”, we really mean “sent us an email”. Given that like Conan, he’s based up in Liverpool, he’s far too far away from us for us to hear him if he did start singing. Conan on the other hand….let’s just say when they play live, you can probably hear them on the other side of the planet. However it was a result of their talents – rather than their volume – that will see the trio support the legendary Sleep over in Norway later this year. We got on the blower to the band’s guitarist/vocalist, Jon Davis, to find out what it’s like when your idols want you to open shows for them.
