Opening track ‘Tonitro’ lays the foundations of Brontide’s latest album nicely – a heavy, chugging guitar drops in and out over a sparse bassline and some rather disconcerting baby noises provide the album’s only vocals. It’s already apparent, less than five minutes into the album, that this isn’t going to be a bore-fest of nondescript background music – the tried-and-tested structure of verses and choruses is cast aside in favour of unexpected changes in rhythm.

It must be somewhat a double edged sword to be labelled as a band with “potential”. On the one hand it’s great that people think your band could be something special, yet at the same point this potential has to be realised or it won’t be long before people’s interest dwindles. Case in point: The Defiled.

There is a reason why debut albums are often held with such affection. They arrive without pressure, without expectation and in the best cases, without unnecessary amounts of polish. Such an example was Joyce Manor’s eponymous album. Not since Against Me! had a young band sounded so fresh or so tunefully intense, and as parallels exist between the early trajectories of both bands, it’s with good reason that the promise of a follow-up has caused waves of excitement to ripple throughout the underground.
