There was a time when Wormed were one of the names to drop in death metal circles. The Spanish tech-death outfit caused a huge stir back in 2003 with their debut Planisphærium, then pretty much disappeared for a decade, with the odd split CD or EP being the only signs of life in the interim. The key thing that made that first record so great was its utterly polarising, full-assault approach to sound and songwriting, which sent them immediately into the league of similarly individualistic bands such as Cryptopsy and Dim Mak.  [Read more →]

Sunday Slaylist: Speculating Sonisphere 2012

Speculating Sonisphere 2012 Slaylist Thrash Hits

Well, this week Sonisphere finally broke their silence and announced some of the bands that will be playing their Spanish and Finnish festivals this year. As yet there’s still no names for Knebworth, and as Metal Hammer noted, some of the names that are playing in Madrid and Helsinki are playing Download in the UK, and therefore seem highly unlikely to make the UK edition of Sonisphere. But it got us thinking – what bands could be playing at Knebworth this year?

Future Hits 104: Layabouts + listen to their album, Savage Behavior

November 23rd, 2011

Layabouts
From: Madrid, Spain
Lazy equation: (QotSA + The Hives) – Spain
URL: Facebook

Thrash Hits Verdict:
You can count the number of notable Spanish rock bands on one hand so we’re always interested when one starts doing things over here. There’s a kind of International Shit Band Filter that means only good bands get this far so we figured Layabouts must be ok. We gave it a listen and we weren’t wrong! What’s more, you can listen to the Spaniards’ third album, Savage Behavior yourself in the listening post below. Fancy!

Album: Dark Moor – Ancestral Romance

When you think of the powerhouses of world metal, you probably don’t think of Spain. Perhaps this is why Dark Moor remain slightly under the radar – it certainly isn’t because they lack anything musically. Following up last year’s storming Autumnal, Iberia’s kings of widdle return in double-quick time with another slab of Castilian excellence.

The Month In Metal: July

July 1st, 2009

Are we really half way through 2009 already? Apparently so. Feeling confused about the six months just gone, and the six left to go? Thrash Hits is here to guide you – well, through the next four weeks, at least.

Events
For those of you lucky enought to live alongside Thrash Hits in London town, tonight sees the launch of Someone’s Yelling Fire, a new punk/hardcore/metal/screamo/emo night at the recently-reopened Highbury Garage. Get there early enough and you’ll be able to catch live sets from The Xcerts, Save Your Breath and Flood of Red. Get their later, and you get to see Thrash Hits staffers collapse at the bar following an excess of beers. Double trouble! And just a fiver to boot.

So it appears that our initial thoughts were correct and Sonisphere will hit seven countries – Holland, Germany, Spain, Catalunya, (that’s in Spain, isn’t it?) Sweden, Finland and, of course, England. It looks pretty ace!

FYI, the 60,000 capacity festival hits Knebworth, Hertfordshire on 01 & 02 August 2009 and is headlined by Metallica (Sunday) and Linkin Park (Saturday) with Mastodon, Lamb Of God in tow, as if we hadn’t told you that already.

Sirenia
The 13th Floor
Nuclear Blast
23 January 2009

by Jerry Ewing

If you listen to Morten Veland, the brains and driving force behind this Norwegian symphonic metal gang, he’ll bang on at length about how unfair it is that Sirenia’s fourth album, The 13th Floor will be viewed by many as a work riding in on the coat tails of the likes of Nightwish, Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil. And that how he formed the similar Tristania (for whom he sang, played guitar and wrote most of the music and lyrics) at the same time as most of the aforementioned started, even if he was unceremoniously dumped from their ranks to breath life into Sirenia in 2001.

2008 into 2009: Bonded By Blood

December 17th, 2008

It’s not a stretch to imagine that Bonded By Blood are Exodus fans. There’s a tshirt in the photo, at the back. Drummer, Carlos Regalado and guitarist, Juan Juarez spill the thrash metal beans.

What was your highlight of 2008?
J: I think it would have to be the Barcelona Spain show that was part of the Thrashing Like A Maniac show with Gama Bomb and Sworn Amongst. It was called the Thrash em All Festival I believe. The crowd there was just amazing, loads drinking and pitting. It was one of the shows where we felt more at home because we understood everyone there, which was cool.
