When people talk about folk metal, they are often talking about metal with a bit of a rustic tinge. The odd flute trill, maybe a violin, some jaunty riffs on the electric guitars – very much more metal than folk. Bands who are as much folk as metal, where the traditional instruments and melodies play as big a role as the crushing riffs – more Pogues than Dropkicks, to borrow a punk comparison – they’re a rarer beast. Metsatöll have been firmly towards the Pogues-end of that spectrum ever since multi-instrumentalist Lauri ‘Varulven’ Õunapuu joined the band in 2000.

Brian ‘Head’ Welch is back but David Silvera isn’t allowed back. It’s not an experiment in dubstep metal. That’s the news in terms of Korn’s 11th album, The Paradigm Shift. The sub-plot is that Jonathan Davis was struggling to get off his meds whilst writing the album so there’s the saga concerning this particular 42-year-old millionaire.

“Former Metallica bass player Jason Newsted”. “Ex ‘tallica bass man Jason Newsted”. “Newsted, the band formed by one time Metallica five-stringer…” Apparently, Jason Newsted used to be in another band. More specifically for those just getting into metal or the less observant amongst you, he used to be in The Biggest Heavy Band Of All Time.

Shining
Redefining Darkness

by David Keevill

Redefining Darkness is an incredibly misleading album title. It screams of try-hard impotence and angsty but flaccid cock-surety. Even from a band who are on the dawn of releasing their eighth studio album, as Shining are, there is something unconvincing in a name that boasts its obscurity, especially against the increasingly toothless backdrop of a genre like black metal can sometimes seem like in these over-saturated times.

Finland’s Swallow The Sun ply a well worn Nordic furrow of gloomy, doomy atmospheric metal that brings to mind snow drifted forests and months without celestial light to brighten moods or music. Their’s is a potent brand of ear candy which pitches the more melodious side of death and pseudo-doom metal alongside truly mellifluous set pieces carried with aplomb by main man Mikko Kotamäki’s hauntingly rich vocal timbre.

Protest The Hero‘s new album is out on March 21st, and is entitled Scurrilous. The course of power metal greatness had never run smoothly, particularly in the case of Helloween. After all but defining the genre with the classic Keeper Of The Seven Keys pair of albums, founding guitarist Kai Hansen departed to form Gamma Ray, and after such forgettable records as Pink Bubbles Go Ape (who knew that that one wasn’t going to be a classic just from the title? Oh. Everyone.) vocalist Michael Kiske also left the fold. While a succession of line-up changes have followed in the years since, it wasn’t until a stable core within the band emerged, with it coming some level of consistency.

Win a Spinefarm Records goody bag!

February 3rd, 2009

children of bodom finland spinefarm records thrash hits

We just got back from Finland where the annual Spinefeast At Sea was taking place. You won’t believe how bad our hangovers are. Still. (Until you see them on the three-part video we’ve made, of course).

Most importantly, we nicked a whole load of swag from the Spinefarm Records HQ while we were in snowy Finland. We’ve stuck a bunch of CDs, a heavy metal (plastic) frisbee, a Rotten Sound t-shirt and some signed posters in a goody bag and YOU could win it. That frisbee will be fun in a few months.
