Metal Hammer’s annual Defenders of the Faith tour is usually a bloody good excuse to catch a whole crop of excellent bands all in one place – this year’s line-up was particularly impressive, with headliners Amon Amarth being backed up by the likes of Carcass, Hell, and Bleed From Within. We got our principal photographer, Mr Gary Wolstenholme, to head on down to Manchester to catch one of the last big metal tours of 2013 do its dirty business all over the O2 Academy.

The new album from Carcass, the mighty Surgical Steel, is officially out this week. To mark the occasion, the guys over at Nuclear Blast have bunged us an exclusive interview clip of Jeff Walker and Bill Steer talking about what it was like to get Ken Own, the original drummer of Carcass, in to the studio to record some backing tracks for the album. FYI, newcomers, back in 1999, Ken Owen suffered from a brain haemorrhage that forced him to spent ten months in hospital, and pretty much forced him to stop drumming.

This is what you call A Really Big Deal. The last couple of years have seen a rash of reformations, with the overwhelming majority of them ending in disappoint and woeful live appearances. Of the ones that have even got as far as producing new music, barely any have been worth the time to listen to (how are you all getting on with 13, by the way?) So, a new Carcass album after 17 years can’t be a good thing, right?
