The old adage about difficult second albums usually applies to bands whose debuts were heaped with a barrage of saccharine praise. Soen, a supergroup made up of members of Willowtree and Opeth, are now are in a similarly difficult juncture but for opposite reasons. Their debut, Cognitive, was universally criticised for its borrowings from Tool, from its sleek, subversive delivery and socio-enviro-eco-political parables, right on through to its Lateralus-like artwork.

It’s always a shame when bands stop liking each other. As a result of the sheer amount of time you have to spend in each others’ company in the ‘hurry up and wait’ lifestyle of any reasonably-successful artist it’s probably unavoidable, but that doesn’t make it any easier on long-time fans. It seems like barely a week passes without some story emerging about how Band Guy A doesn’t like Band Guy B anymore, and its usually about money. Sadly but unsurprisingly, everyone’s favourite Swedish death metal pioneers have fallen foul of it too, it seems.

Metallers are po-faced. We don’t really like the idea of a joke, because the joke is often on us. We can laugh [ahem] at Steel Panther because the obvious pastiche of 80s glam rock drips off them as evidently as tequila, sweat and silicon shavings. But at the end of the day, we can just listen to Slayer and remind ourselves that the kernel of heavy metal is serious business, crafted by stocky-legged men hitting the bottom E string really hard and really fast.

Grand Magus have proven they know what makes for a good heavy metal record more than a few times already, with the likes of Iron Will and Hammer Of The North displaying a band so well-versed in the art of The Mighty Riff. Triumph Of Power may not mess too much with what’s become a bit of a formula, but that doesn’t matter in the face of what they present us with each and every time.

Interview: Erik Danielsson from Watain on Satan, songwriting, and the true nature of black metal

January 29th, 2014

Erik Danielsson from Watain by Gary Wolstenholme 2 Thrash Hits

While Watain’s Erik Danielsson is an affable, articulate and charming character, it’s very clear that to him black metal is life and death. For some, that kind of confidence is both disturbing and off-putting. For Danielsson, who grew up and into a scene that at the time was much reviled and demonised, it makes sense that he would have such strong and personal opinions on how black metal and in particular, Watain is viewed. We asked Cheryl Carter to sit down with Danielsson prior to his band’s December show here in London, to ponder those issues at length.

They conducted this interview in the dark. Fitting.

Live: Watain + Coltsblood @ London Camden Electric Ballroom – 08 December 2013

January 17th, 2014

Watain at Bloodstock Open Air 2012 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

We’re not sure if Erik Danielsson was casting an unholy spell on the audience at Watain’s show at the Camden Electric Ballroom. He seems like the type. He’s certainly got all the smoke and fire and stench to carry out all manner of rituals. We asked Cheryl Carter if she could resist the hexes long enough to write a review which we’re only posting now because we lost it down the back of sofa, or whatever the digital version of that excuse may be.

6 things we learnt at watching Watain in London:

Anyway…

If you’re reminiscing and moaning of the days when the majority of contemporary hard rock didn’t sound like a Led Zeppelin rip-off band, here’s a little EP to jolt your faith back in place. Blues Pills are to release their first piece of recorded work since signing to Nuclear Blast, and trust me, you’re going to want this mere four-track EP. It’s going to carry your mind and soul out of the haze and into a high of a new musical experience.

Cult of Luna’s latest EP came as one hell of a surprise , given the length of time it took for them to get around to the devastating, electronica-spattered masterpiece that is Vertikal. “More of that could only be a good thing!” We thought. It kind of is and it kind of isn’t, and which end of that you sit at will depend very much on you. There’s a shift of focus here that may make you very uncomfortable indeed.

You don’t need to mention the name Watain to many headbangers to conjure up a range of divisive opinions ranging from the nothing-more-than-a-Dissection-tribute accusers, to the fanatical shit-your-pants best-black-metal-band-in-the-world fanboys. There’s no question that the black metal trio have made a name for themselves; they’ve carved out their position within the genre’s elite, so to speak, on the back of hard graft and infamous live performances – a veritable orgy of pigs’ blood, Satan and a shitload of fire.
