Eluveitie have been quietly but confidently building a fanbase in their corner of folk metal for twelve years now. As an eight-strong group featuring archaic instruments and a penchant for mid-European Dark Age origin stories, their tale was practically primed for obscurity. However, their winning of a prize at the 2014 Swiss Music Awards for their live show proves that their brand of eclectic, heavy Celt-metal isn’t just another hilarious gimmicky oddity, devoid of meaning or content.

Coilguns

Dead Dead Dead Music

One of the most maddening things about people’s reactions to side-projects – particularly those involving members of their favourite bands – it’s that people get the huff when said side-projects don’t sound like the band that they’re a side project of. So if you’re expecting Coilguns, a splinter faction of half the current members of The Ocean, to release records that mirror the deep, pulsating progressive post-metal/math experimentalism of their parent band – music that require contemplation, chin-stroking, and overly-wordy genre description on two-bit metal blogs – then you’re going to be disappointed.

Stadia Rods isn’t that kind of record. This isn’t so much an EP as it is an exploding pressure valve.

If you are a massive fan of Hatebreed – or any band in that vein – and desperate for more of that kind of music, you may want to skip to the first paragraph after the jump: the rest of this review may put you off a record you will probably enjoy. Album: Eluveitie – Everything Remains As It Never Was

Swiss folk metallers Eluveitie attracted a certain amount of attention with their song ‘Inis Mona’, the lead single for their last album, Slania. One of the finer examples of the folk metal style, it firmly established Eluveitie as more authentically ‘folk’ than most of their peers, a position they consolidated last year with the release of their pure folk album, Evocation I- The Arcane Dominion.

However, despite Slania being a solid record, it was let down by being the type of album that had one or two colossal songs but patches of filler. With Everything Remains As It Never Was, the band has resumed the metal, but their sojourn in acoustic folk appears to have done them no end of good.

2008 into 2009: Malefice

December 8th, 2008

Malefice are one of British heavy metal’s great hopes for the next few years. Basically, they’re dead good, bloody love their metal (especially the Download Festival part of it) and vocalist Dale Butler, does not like Kid Rock.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Playing Download 2008, dude. Literally lived a dream that day. Thank you to all the people that came out early and bled for us! It was insane!

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Probably crashing our van on tour in September. It wasn’t that bad – nobody was hurt – but it kept us off the road for four days. Bear in mind we had been in the studio recording the new album for about three to four months, so we were eager to be out playing. It sucked.
