It’s nice seeing a band comprised of musicians that you have incredible respect for but it’s bittersweet when it’s a band that, for a variety of reasons, not many people will ever get the chance to see. This was the situation when Raz went down to see Mutoid Man, who have members of Converge and Cave In in their midst, supported by Black Mare in LA.

Six things we learned while watching Mutoid Man in LA…

SXSW 2013: The day Raz went to David Draiman’s house

May 16th, 2013

A few weeks ago, I got an invite to go to David Draiman’s house in Texas. He was going to provide food from the best barbecue joint in Austin. The catch? I had to listen to the new album from his new project, Device. Mmmm, barbecue. How bad could it be, right? Mmmm, barbecue.

‘Mad’ David Draiman. He’s the singer from Disturbed. He made that weird monkey noise in rock club floor-filler, ‘Stupify’. He’s the guy with those massive lip piercings. He tweets in 100 PER CENT CAPITAL LETTERS on Twitter. He’s right up there with Fred Durst and Coby Dick as a premier larger-than-life nu metal personality – ostensibly macho and totally metal. There’s a lot to make fun of and cynical old me? I’m sceptical about this whole shebang.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 022: We’ve Gone Transatlantic

April 1st, 2013

The Thrash Hits Podcast 022

We’re at the mercy of modern technology for this episode of the Thrash Hits Podcast – Raz has decamped to the USA for a few weeks for SXSW and some California sunshine, leaving the rest of us here in miserable old England. With possibly the dodgiest Skype connection imaginable, Hugh and Raz discuss how SXSW has changed over the years, as well as speculating on how two very different kinds of hype affect bands – that currently being felt by Ghost (or Ghost BC, if you’re an American) and the kind that surrounds Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats.

SXSW 2013: the best of the UK’s heavy music in Austin

SXSW 2013 south by southwest 2013 thrash hits logo

South By Southwest is a wonderful place where Foo Fighters play on the patio of a bar and Kvelertak play five shows in three days and we see them all by dumb luck. While the big picture says SXSW is about bands for radio, the underground says it’s all about metal. That’s why the pizza shop on 6th St is called Hoek’s Death Metal Pizza and has a dozen metal bands playing in its backyard every day. There are also some excellent bands flying over to Austin from the UK. Here’s a rundown of the seven that we could find.

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #5 – SXSW 2012

April 11th, 2012

So James Monteith, intrepid TesseracT guitarist and Thrash Hits columnist found himself in Austin, Texas for the South By Southwest music festival again. He didn’t puke, but he did drink tequila, see a load of cool bands and hang out with loads of cool people. Cool. He’s written about it AND answered a question from the postbag. Whoop.

After another eventful SXSW, I thought, “It’s time to write another column.” If you read my SXSW column last year (or have seen the countless comments referring to the incident), you may be aware of my minor vomit spillage on Thrash Hits Editor, Raz’s shoes in the Dirty Dog bar. As one who enjoys a little nostalgia, the temptation to relive the moment in the same venue at the Metal Hammer showcase, standing in the same spot as last year, was overwhelming.

Primitive Weapons

From: Brooklyn, New York
Lazy equation: (Helmet + Cancer Bats + a bit of Pentagram) x New York City
URL: Facebook // Twitter

Thrash Hits Verdict: We came across Primitive Weapons in Austin, Texas in March 2011 via a recommendation by Cancer Bats’ manager. “I think you’ll like them,” he said. He was correct. The Brooklyn monsters are the new project of former Gay For Johnny Depp man, Arty Shepherd and they ply a furious and sinister metal-oriented hardcore. Recently signed to label du jour, Prosthetic Records, they’re in exactly the right place to become one of the most acclaimed bands of 2012. We love the album, The Shadow Gallery and we believe that you will too. We had a chat with singer, David Castillo so that you can find out everything about Primitive Weapons.

PROGTOLOGY with James Monteith of TesseracT: #2 – A Djentlemen’s Guide to SxSW

April 4th, 2011

After the awesomeness of TesseracT guitarist, James Monteith‘s first column about Djent and self-indulgence, he checks in from on the road – the prog-metallers are currently on their second US tour – with his second column all about how to party hard at South By South West

Sitting on the washing machine in a launderette is a great place to be when on tour. With no Wi-Fi and the mellowing rumble of the drums, it’s a serene place to reflect on times past, and what a crazy week I’ve just had. I’m at the start of the TesseracT tour with Protest The Hero and Maylene & The Sons of Disaster which is awesome, and I’ve just come from Austin, Texas and the South By South West festival.

The Sword re-release albums after touring with Metallica

March 20th, 2009

Austin, Texas. That’s where everyone is this week at SxSW festival. We mean EVERYONE. Even Metallica are there doing a “secret show” that’s about as secret as the secret that beer makes you drunk.

The Sword are from Austin. The Sword have been touring with Metallica and now they’re re-releasing Gods Of The Earth and Age Of Winters in a fancy boxset package thing on April 6th. There’s a sticker in there too.
