The Thrash Hits Podcast 013: Summer? GTFO

September 6th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Reading and Leeds Festivals over and done with, the UK summer festival season is officially over. Well, it’s over as far as we’re concerned. This week, Raz and Hugh look back on their highlughts and lowlights from Reading and Leeds respectively, as well as taking a look at this week’s top news stories: the new album announcement from Deftones, and Sylosis bunking off from a European tour with Devin Townsend and Fear Factory to go gallivanting around the USA supporting Lamb of God.

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

Yep, it’s back – it’s time for episode 002 of the Thrash Hits podcast. We would’ve had it up yesterday, but iTunes was breaking our balls. This week Thrash Hits’ editors, Raziq Rauf and Hugh Platt, review the Download Festival 2012 line-up, discuss which bands fluffed it on the main stage, and sees Raz keep interrupting Hugh’s moaning with his bad James Hetfield impression.

Sylosis live at Liverpool O2 Academy 2 on 1st May 2012 c/o Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

Those not-nearly-as-praised-as-they-ought-to-be Reading metallers, Sylosis, finished their final UK tour before releasing their as-yet-untitled third studio album. Okay, so Sylosis do get a lot of praise, but that’s because they a) awesome, and b) they keep getting more awesome, which means c) that they deserve even more praise than they get already.

Anyway, we made sure our Liverpool snapper, Matt Thomas, was in place to snap the whole shebang when it rolled into his hometown.

Download Festival announces 22 more bands for 2012

February 29th, 2012

If you get up very early in the morning, you’ll have spotted that Download Festival‘s head promoter, Andy Copping, announced another 22 bands for this year’s festival via his Twitter account this morning. And as you’d expect from such a large announcement, it’s a mix of old and new, big and small, and awesome and just plain awful.

Thrash Hits 2011 Albums of the Year

We’ve shown you what Raz and Hugh’s albums of the year are, but they’re not the only ones responsible for the Thrash Hits Top 20 Albums of 2011. Oh no. We’ve got a whole load of contributors – writers, photographers, and miscellaneous behind-the-scenes types – that help keep Thrash Hits running smoothly, and the albums they loved the most from 2011 matter just as much as those favoured by the boss men.

Remember ten years ago when the British metal scene was alive and kicking with bands like Raging Speedhorn, Pitchshifter and Stampin’ Ground storming stages nationwide? It may not have lasted that long but you have to admit the UK scene has seen some drastic improvement over recent years. We thought we’d head down to Islington Academy and bang our heads to some homegrown talent.

Sonisphere Festival 2011: Interviews, Photos, Setlists – it’s all here

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here.

All our work from Sonisphere Festival 2011 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Individual band coverage (interviews, photos, setlists and some tiny reviews), rumours, drinking games, stage times, dodgy photos of as many sexy ladies in various states of safe-for-work undress as we can legitimately get away with? It’s all here.

Live: Sylosis @ London Camden Underworld – 25 February 2011

March 11th, 2011

After the drooling adulation we threw at Sylosis‘ new album Edge Of The Earth, you might think the chances of us missing their headlining show in London were worse than the odds of a Nickelback cover band surviving a support slot on a Slayer tour. And you would be correct. Here’s a bumper crop things we found out from tonight.

Can bands stop making albums that are too long? It’s getting ridiculous.

March 2nd, 2011

By Thrash Hits standards, Tom Dare is fairly inadequate in the “miserable bastard” department. But he’s fed up with stupidly long records.

This is Tom Dare being semi-naked and exhausted in some mud for Thrash Hits

Can we have a complete moratorium on stupidly long albums, starting this very minute? It’s getting right on my tits. Granted that’s a sizeable platform, but I don’t like having uninvited guests on there, and in the last year there has been little that has plonked it’s irritation down on them more than this issue.

Album: Sylosis – Edge Of The Earth

Edge Of The Earth
Nuclear Blast
11 March 2011

by Tom Dare

Sylosis are a band still tagged with the word “potential”, which might give the (totally wrong) impression they aren’t already fucking brilliant. In Sylosis’ case, it’s that they sound capable of greatness but haven’t quite reached the heights their work thus far hints at. With Edge Of The Earth, the band’s second full-length album, they’re attempting to shrug off that “potential” label once and for all. [Read more →]
