Bloodstock Open Air 2012 Thrash Hits

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here. All our work from Bloodstock Open 2012 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Interviews, photos, setlists, rumours, and who knows? – maybe even some tiny reviews – it’s all here. [Read more →]

The problem with achieving brilliance is the weight of expectation that becomes attached to subsequent works. For Testament, having pulled off the ultimate achievement last time out – effectively having split up, an irreplaceable member battling serious illness, but still returning with the most ball-drainingly superb album of a 25 year career in the form of The Formation of Damnation – then that weight threatens to become unreasonable when it comes to the follow-up: Dark Roots Of Earth.

There’s a general principal with the great thrash bands: their stuff from the ’80s is absolutely essential, their stuff in the ’90s divisive, and their stuff from the ’00s is really  for existing fans only. Except every now and again, one of those bands that took metal to new extremes and influenced practically every non-doom band since releases an album that demands even those of just moderate passing interest to pay attention. Testament did it with The Formation Of Damnation, Megadeth did it with Endgame, and now Kreator have done it with Phantom Antichrist.

Bloodstock Open Air 2012 adds Testament as a UK exclusive.

February 15th, 2012

Bloodstock Open Air have confirmed that Testament – one of the most criminally-overlooked thrash bands, in our opinion – will be playing their only UK show of 2012 as part of the Bloodstock bill. And while we’ve lightly mocked some of the “UK EXCLUSIVE!!11!!” claims thrown around by festivals with this year’s bookings, bagging sole possession of Testament is definitely a big win in Bloodstock’s favour.

Album: Bonded By Blood – Exiled To Earth

While the latest crop of thrash revivalists have released some fine records, with the Big Four tour and the old greats like Exodus, Testament and Overkill back in fine fettle, there’s noticeable problem from examining the records from the new bands. While there are some fine albums, but no one has written a The New Order, a Forbidden Evil or most appropriately a Bonded By Blood. The new generation is still marathon distances behind the bands responsible for those records, and bands like Bonded By Blood still need to convince us this latest movement hasn’t run out of steam.

Who says American bands have all the best riffs? Who says British bands can’t bring the groove as well as their counterparts from across the pond? Those who do clearly have not listened to Sworn Amongst’s second record Severance – either that or they have assumed they are from California, rather than Hull.

Live + Photos: Testament @ Shepherds Bush Empire – 24 July 2009

July 29th, 2009

Can you think of a better way to spend a Friday night than watching Testament carve a West London venue into bloody chunks? No, you can’t. If you think you can, you’re wrong. Or you’re lying.

If Chuck Billy wasn’t in Testament, he’d be their number 1 fan. Almost as soon as Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson have taken up the foot-on-monitor poses for the start of ‘The Preacher’, Chuck Billy is air-guitaring his half-size mic stand like an 8 year-old who’s just discovered this thing called ‘metal’ for the first time, and can’t wait to tell all his friends.

Future Hits 038: Warpath

July 6th, 2009

The pureblood thrash of Warpath has already won them the top spot of Terrorizer Magazine‘s latest annual readers’ poll. That’s a mark of a band destined for Future Hits right there – and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Richard Goss, and lead guitarist Pete Hawthorne, both agree.

From: Cardiff, UK
Sounds like: Megadeth, Testment, fours guys who take absolutely no shit from anyone.

Thrash Hits verdict: Warpath don’t give two tugs of a dead dog’s cock about fad-thrash, ironic nostalgia, or most of the people of Swansea. What they do care about are all the things that made thrash great in the first place – riffs so fast they blur at the edges, snarling vocals that seethe with raw aggression, and the righteous banging of heads.
